Question Where can I get touch up paint

I'm looking to get some touch up paint for my '87 911, Guards Red (L80K) to fix some rock chips on the hood. I purchased some from Autovisuals that is supposed to be L80K but it turns out that it is a darker red than what is on the car. Where can I get touch up paint that will match exactly (or can I)?

*Do not* order your paint in the pen form.

They have the exact match by paint code. If your Guards Red has faded in the 15 years since it was applied, it won't be a perfect match though.

Edit: Doug beet me to it!

Go to a model kit store and try out the Testor's Guards Red. At $4.50 you can't beat it. If it doesn't match you're not out much.

Paintsratch can match your paint. I ordered some of their stock Guards red and it was also too red.

I sent them my headlight bezel and they mathed it exactly. Really, a perfect match. They also refunded my initial purchase.

Total turnaround was about 10 days.

If I remember right it cost 20 bucks for the match but it was well worth it.

Thanks for the info. I went to their web site and ordered a 1 oz bottle. We'll see if it matches exactly. If not, I can send in a sample to get it matched exactly.

Do I need to get the clearcoat as well? I'm just touching up small rock chips.

Yes, you need the cc. It base coat will just 'disolve' off if not.

Be gentle with the painting.

Use a toothpick and let the paint flow into the chip. Not a big blob just a litlle flow. You will have to do this multiple times to fill the chip. Then small amounts of clear coat the same way.

Do not get in a hurry and it will look great.

Hurry and it will look like crap. Ask me how I know!!!!!!!!!

The nearest Porsche dealership from me is over an hour away. That makes on-line ordering a whole lot easier! I suppose that I could wait until the next time I take it in for service...

Another, less expensive, source for paint is http://www.towerpaint.com/index2.html
They will custom mix (sample or paint code) aerosol cans, pens or bottles. I've been very pleased with there service and product. Also, the spray nozzle on their cans are excellent.

From their website:

16 oz. enamel filled spray can $14.95 each
6 or more spray cans of same color enamel $12.95 each
16 oz. lacquer filled spray can $19.95 each
6 or more spray cans of same color lacquer $14.95 each
16 oz. primer surfaces spray can $14.95 each
Color matching $14.95

Sample should be 2"x3"
and sent in with the Mail/Fax Form.

Include $7.95 handling charge per order and 95 cents shipping for each additional spray can ordered. Add 5% sales tax in Wisconsin.

Places like SunCoast, Brumo's, or Stoddards will take you order over the phone and ship. No problem. And the touch up paint has "Porsche" on the label. I have a Guards red 89 that I use the OE touch up paint with. Match has been more then adequate.
