Duck tail or whale tail
I'm looking to dress up the back of my 1974 911 coupe and am torn between the the two. I really like the look of a whale tail but thought that it would probably be too big. Looking for expert opinions before I commit one way or another.

shootme some pictures when you are done as I am contemplating a carrera tail for my '76. Speaking of "done", there are several threads if you search on whale tail or duck tail, or sweet a$$es (ha!) that have plenty of pictures that can help you see some examples. These are very helpful, and motivation for some. "Some" you say? Be prepared for the responses that will suggest what you propose as blasphemy! Sit back, enjoy the inputs. If you want other inputs from those who modiy their cars to suit their own personal reasons, join us at http://www.gruppeb.org/forum2/
Hope you see/find what you are looking for! Pelican has some excellent buys on quality products for both ducks and tails. bh

A question I am qualified to answer....I am an expert and I also play one on TV. I can expertly say that most of the guys with carrera tails will tell you it looks better. Most of the duck crowd will tell you that it looks better. It all depends on your taste and what best suits the proportions of your car. The best way to decide is find pctures of cars similiar to your with the different tails to get a birds eye view.
Oh, and by the way, (clear throat, clear throat) "If you put on a rear spoiler, you'd be remiss not to add a front one." Failure to do so could cause your car to self barrel roll, do unexpected wheelies, and cause the following maladies: gastric distress, adult acne, webbed feet, blue screen of death, armpit hair loss, gum disease, and St. Augustine decline. (This was all said tongue in cheek and aimed at the sky is falling crowd) |

No expert here...and I'm sure you will get responses from every angle:
1. Go duck tail (looking at Jack's car is enough to support that desicion), 2. Go whale tail (my personal preference), and of course; 3. Go without a tail (nothing better than the natural lines of a 911 a$$) Post some pics of your car so we can take a peek. Here's mine with an older Carrera tail.

I've always been of the opinion that tails don't quite look right on a car w/o the rear fenders flared. ...the exception is a car prepared for the track.
Just my $.02

Personally, I never did like no tail?
I'm no expert, at tail, but I'm Irish so ere goes. My 74 with an 88 Turbo Sport Cab upgrade look.... Was blue Targa, now Black Cab (flame on) The look of my car is to satisfy my dreams of Pcar ownership. I may get another or others; but this is the car as a wee lad I'd always wanted. Wish Want Need Got Get it? ![]()

If it's just for looks then it's your call, but if you actually want to reduce the amount of rear lift at high speed a whale tail or even better would be a full 53" IROC tail. Both options would be "period correct" for your car, just matters how effecient you want to get...
cheers !!

Had a carrera tail. Did the right thing and sold it. Now have a duck. Life is good.
