melted fuel pump relay,socket

I have an 80 911 SC TARGA. Last weekend I decided to clean some of the grime from the engine and think that I screwed up royally. I covered the air intake and proceeded with degreaser followed by a quick rinse of the engine compartment. Suprisingly, the motor started ok afterwards and after a brief period of drying out was running great. The next day, I was driving the car and heard a brief whistle and felt a sudden lull of the motor. I pulled over and opened the trunk to find that the Red Fuel Pump Relay was melted into the socket. I also noticed that the insulation was burned off of the wire leading to what I beleive is the warm up regulator. I stripped the insulation off of the wires in the socket and it appears that the red/white wire is the one burned. I am fearful that it may have damaged the other wires in the harness as well. Anyway, it looks like I have a problem from front to back and would appreciate any advice on how to proceed with rewiring and diagnosing the problem which caused the event in the first place.

Sometimes the socket can fail. May be worth taking to a good shop to fix. Wiring is something worth fixing correctly. Now if you are the kind of person who is good with wiring and the various techniques, then you can purchase new relay sockets, relays, and wiring. Try to min splicing wires. The trick is to get all the correct gauge wires and colors.

Yes, I agree. I want it done right. This is my first Porsche and I am a little hesitant to perform complex repairs at this point. I used to do a lot of the work myself on my VWs but the quarters a lot tighter on the 911s. Plus I would like to minimize my down time. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good Porsche shop in Dallas/Ft. Worth. I am pretty close to ZIMS.
