917 Engine & the German Military

I vaguely recall reading something somewhere (maybe here?) about a link between the German military and Porsche's development of the 917 engine - anybody recall this? Well, apparently it is not true - at least according to Karl Ludvigsen. What is true (regarding VW) is interesting though!

"A notable deletion in the new book (Excellence Was Expected) is the story that the development of the 917's engine was linked with that of a Porsche project for the German military, which was said to have provided the funding for the engine. I dropped it because I found no evidence to support it. Instead, we have the startling information that Porsche racing in those years was heavily subsidised by Volkswagen, on the condition that air-cooled engines were used to sustain the image of the Beetle!" - Karl Ludvigsen

Didn't the 914's have VW engines, and the 912s(except 76) have the Porsche with it's stronger case etc?
It's interesting to note the involvment of gov. in the development of private vehicles, though I thought the public/private connection was split after WW2. I read in VW Trends a while back about the Brits having great fun driving Schwimwagons(sp) off docks at 40mph and driving them around in the lakes. The factories were supposed to have been rebuilt soon after and up and quickly operating again.

OK, I plead guilty, but Karl and Peter made me do it.

What's Inside Porsche's Workshop?

And speaking of Excellence Was Expected...has anyone received theirs from Amazon? I thought that it was supposed to ship mid Sept.

My desk is cleared, I've reinforced the legs, I'm ready...back out to the porch to wait for the UPS man.

Haven't ordered mine yet, but I'd be interested to hear from those who have it. I've heard there really isn't much new information in the pre-1977 category already covered by Edition 1.
