Weight Loss in the Rear

In the '84 Carrera, we are thinking of going w/ SSI's and a Monty Dual Out Exhaust. What weight loss range should be expected with these mods? Anyone have experience about how the weight loss feels? Also, what does the spare tire weigh?

I have no idea how much weight you will lose - I would guess maybe 10 -15 pounds. From my experience with similar changes on other Porsches, you will likely not notice any difference. That does not mean it will not help - it is just very minor.

On the spare, pull it out and weigh it - maybe 15 pounds. I would leave it in place as it is part of the cars crumple zone and helps to even out the front / rear weight balance.

I don't think you'll lose much weight in the rear, but you'll lose some. It kinda depends on how much the Monty weighs. The stock muffler on an '88 weighs about 30-35lbs, and the SSI's will probably weigh about the same as the stock heat exchangers and maybe the crossover pipe. I can't imagine that the cat weighs too much. I would think total loss would be 10-15 lbs, and when you consider the back of the car probably weighs about 1600 lbs give or take, even at 20 lbs you are only talking about 1.2% of the weight of just the back.

Your best bet for weight loss will be to do lots of little stuff over time that 5-15 lbs here and there adds up. If you want big savings you'll likely have to go with replacing major body panels (bumpers, hoods, fenders), wholesale removal of large systems (A/C), or replacing items with much much lighter items (seats, windows)

About 11 pounds if I remember correctly. 65 for your stock exhaust, and 15 for each SSI, and 24 for the stock muffler for a total of 54#. If your Monty weighs more than 24, then savings will be less.
