Thinking of buying this - Am I MAD??
Hi Guys,
This 1969 911E is on eBay at the moment £2000 at the mo: It's got a broken engine, but body work is fine (apparently!) I'm going to see her on Saturday (any tips on what I should look for?) and as long as the body checks out OK the plan will be to sell my SC and use the funds to restore this one. I'd probably put a recon engine in it, I've tracked down a rebuilt 2.0S engine (would the old one be worth anything?) and should still have money left for a decent paint job. So guys, am I completely mad?? Cheers, Tim.

Not mad but you'll ned some time! Personally I'd go for an RS replica with a 3.2 engine (it's never going to be original is it!) If you're prepared to sink another 10K into it you'll have a fantastic car as long as the rust isn't terminal.
What to look for? - RUST - everything else is easily sorted! Good Luck

That thing just HAS to be rusty! Guy obviously knows nothing about the car 'rare G50 gearbox' - in 1969?
Depending on how much it goes for, it might be a good buy, but I don't think it will stay that low. I agree with Roy though, if you are going to do an engine swap, you might as well go for a later one, 3.0 or 3.2 then you can have a real hot rod. |

looks like it could be a nice parts car, if nothing else -- let us know what you think after you've seen her. I might be interested, but i wouldn't bid against you, of course.

Tim,
Not mad but it is a long haul, How much working space have you got to tinker in? I vaguely remember seeing either a clip or photo of your garage and there was not that much room? Could be mistaken though. Yep rust is going to be your biggest problem. B posts Lower sills especially where the b posts join them check area above rear tail lights around headlights check the inner wings, from underneath and inside (boot) lift the carpet. check the lower front chassis pan, where the a-arms bolt onto. around the windscreen, try and lift the rubber in the lower corners to get a good peek Then lift the carpets and look at the floor all over check under the battery etc. Rear window area And Im not sure where the oil tank sits on that one, but on mine I had 2 inches of dirt, grit, salt on top of the oil tank inside the rear fender and this eventually rusted a small hole through the inner rear. Go with caution and do the deal with your head and not the heart (ask me how I know ![]() Take a magnet with you to "feel over" the body work, the attraction should be the same over the whole body and if an area does not feel as if it attracts strongly, that could indicate some filler of sorts Good luck mate and keep us informed Cheers Jakes p.s. as for the motor, Go big and bad!!!!

Tim, I posted comments about this car over on the PCGB forum but in terms of the engine you might get a pleasant surprise - I would be very surprised if a camshaft is actually broken - the rockers are designed to be the weakest link & they will shear first before any damage is caused to the cams.

Someone's got to buy it otherwise we will have lost another early year 911...
As an aside, I would have thought it might be worth that in parts? |

Yes you are mad. You are condemning yourself to a Porscheless driving period for a while, setting yourself up for a lot of hard and frustrating work, endless scrapes, scratches and booboos, nightmares of little niggles and snags to sort and a bottomless moneypit for your sparecash and you are trading a good car to do it.
Go for it in the full realisation that you are just as crazy as the rest of us! ![]()

Cheers, Tim.

You may be mad.
I drug a '73 home on a trailer from an insurance auction. Sat on jackstands in the garage for over a year before it was able to move again under it's own (transplanted 3.2) power. Was it worth it? You bet. Makes every other car I've owned feel like a turd. |

I'm afraid of what you'll find under the floor mats. If you have a rotissorie, the restoration job will be a little easier.

Barking! On one hand you've got a (nearly) clean slate on which to illustrate your personal vision of 911 perfection. On the other hand, have a look at the nearby thread detailing the cost of just that to another 912 body. Oh heck. Buy it and do it! (But buy it cheap!)

What is 2000 lbs. (sorry, I don't have symbol) in USD? I thought that would be close to $4000. That's a lot of money for anything too rusty. I have a rust bucket and I can see the 100's of hours for rust repair and eradication. BTDT on the 914.
