Thanks for the photoshop Max. Now I'll have to do it next week instead of next year. Wife's already getting on my case cause she knows I'll disappear into the garage three times as long as Wayne projects in his book.

In the way of settling a discussion on the "Racing' board of Pelican regarding Club Racing rules; do you Weissach owners agree that this variant was the only SC to be delivered with 7'' and 8" wheels? All others were 6's and 7's albeit in 16" form.

Thanks, Mike Quigley
75' 911 3.0 Euro

Schrup 09-25-2003 08:04 PM

I believe 80 SCs came with 15 x 6/7s. I'm not sure when the factory started sending them out with 16" wheels stock. I think they were a option in 80.

The car for sale is very nice. I do wonder, however, if it has been in a front-end accident. Maybe it's me, but it looks like the front bumper droops down a bit.

Plus, if the seller is aware of the prestige of this car, and intends to sell it as completely stock, why are there 50-series tires and, I assume, 15-inch rims on it? And why hasn't the seller at least lowered it, which is a reversable modification, to make the car look more appealing? For argument's sake, say the seller doesn't want to alter the stock height (although someone earlier explained dealerships were known to lower 911s upon delivery), the rims seem, however, to throw a wrench into this deal. If the car only has 29,000 miles, the stock rims and tires should be available and have very little wear on them.

Of course, this is conjecture: who knows? But the sag in that front bumper would make me a bit wary...

Tinker 09-25-2003 09:56 PM

My sister has been advertising her Weissach for a few months now with no offers. It looks almost exactly like the photoshop doctored picture Maxnine911 posted, except the rims are polished. Interior is near perfect with a new headliner and recovered seat in the original style. Great reliable car, but no offers even at $12.5k.

It's a bad market to be a seller in......but many opportunities for buyers.

Tinker, what is her location & how many miles are on the car? Mine had 105k & I paid $13.5k, the guy had it for sale for 3months at $15k.

A few thoughts:

1). All 1980 911SCs were delivered with 85mph speedometers. Most owners have (by now) changed over to a 150mph speedo. Any car priced at such a premium should be delivered with TWO speedometers or mileage is suspect, at best.

2.) The factory ride-height on the 1980 911s was nothing short of ridiculous. Not only was there a 1/4" spacer on the front shock towers, but the car also came with CN36 (pirelli) 185/70 & 215/60 15. Yes, I'm serious. (So Cal) Dealers used to say, "don't lower your car, it will mess up the geometry that was set up by the factory" which was a lot like pointing to a steaming manure heap and saying, "that, son, is pure gold".

3.) The 15" wheels were 7 & 8s, however, many publications tended to misquote them as 6&7 (including Excellence (8/89-gasp!). Many of the SCs came with 16"s, but they were 6s & 7s.
The 7 & 8 16s (a la Turbo) could be had as an option.

One thing to keep in mind on the wheels: 15s will offer better acceleration due to the shorter gearing as a result of the 1" smaller diameter (not as drastic as a R&P change, but along those lines).

4.) The Weissach is a great place to start as a track car: The Bilstein struts are easily modified to RSR specs; you already have spoilers, and wide wheels, now just ad 23/29 torsion, 22/21 (carrera) sway, SSIs, and a couple of Euro FI components and you are on your way to dominanting your class. Just stay on top of valve adjustments, and add oil, and tires. Lots of tires.

5.) The SC is, absolutely -without a doubt-, the most reliable car known to man. As the original owner (well, sort of, traded my 6.9 Mercedes with my Dad in '91... he's the original orignal owner)
I am far from objective, however, the imperical data is in the fact that the car has over 200,000 miles and the heads have NEVER been off. (It has been a dedicated track car for over 12 years now.)

6.) The prices quoted by the other Weissach enthusiasts seem more in line with reality. $25K is too much, no mater what kind of shape the car is in. A few years ago a friend of my was just about yelled at by a guy with a W/S/E when my friend told he, oh, yes, I know about these cars, my friend has one and runs it at the track all the time. The "gentleman" said, "That's the most stupid thing I've ever heard; they're a classsic and a collector, etc"

Yeah, like a 912 (no offense) or a Maseratti-Chrysler TC.

Who do you suppose is having more fun Mr. Speculator with 45k miles, or me?

AntiCHP 09-26-2003 11:03 AM

Oh yeah, the picture...(Lowered, with 15s @ 225 F & 245 R)

I see your Weissach doesnt have the fog lights? my weissach did not come with them either,i thought that all Weissachs had them as part
of the package.I fog light switch hole was never cut out at the factory.
What kind of seats do you have in there?

AntiCHP 09-26-2003 01:03 PM

Good catch!

Yep, it was supposed to have fog lights (also on the list of items ... including 4 speaker stereo (instead of having that funky speaker in the dash), a/c, leather, etc...)

The dealer said to bring it by and they would put them in, but we never took the car back. Same with my car: black accessory hole next to the cigar lighter.

I'm as blasphemous as they come:

Those fog lights would be one more thing to put in the box of crap that I took off the car! The A/C? Took it out. Stereo and speakers? Gone. The lovely Recaro seats were great, nice leather and bolstering, but a pain in the ass once you start wearing a 5point harness because there are no holes in the seats and the belts tend to work their way down one's shoulders!

Plus, they are heavy as sin! -so, I took them out and replaced them with a couple of lightweight Corbeau seats. (Great seats for the money, but I'm thinking I might replace the driver's with a Sparco.)

My weight is down to 2430# with stock bumpers and glass.

Thankfully, the fog lights weren't put in because I'm running out of boxes!

By the way, sorry about the size of that picture! Yikes, what an ego-maniac!

-Mike

Also,

(In keeping with the no-fog-lights theme, I figured no-headlights would offer some vertical symetry.)

Tinker 09-26-2003 08:05 PM

Paul,

It's been in So. Cal its whole life and has around 175k.

She changed the front valance to a Carrera style. I think it looks a bit cleaner.

Looks very nice. The color of the carpeting catches me a bit off guard - seems more maroon than the original red, and I've never seen a black dash on this model before, but it looks fine. It would be nice to have at least one pic of the front of the car in the ad too. Looks like a custom center console(?).

Good luck on the auction!

Schrup 09-27-2003 07:59 PM

Kar-spt That is a beautiful car from what I can see in the photos. I do have a few questions though.
Are You the one who restored it & if so were you trying to restore it to original?
Are those seat inserts perforated?
Did you save the original dash?
Is that a custom console?
Are the rear wheels 9 in.? They came with 8".
Are the windows tinted?
What entailed blueprint & balance? What else was done to the motor?
Why no pictures of the engine or front of the car?
Has the car been repainted?
It's hard for me to give an opinion without these answers? But looking at the pictures it looks as if complete originality wasn't the goal in the restoration.

AntiCHP 09-27-2003 11:10 PM

Wow!

That's a clean specimen at what would appear to be a fair price.

If I didn't already have 7 cars (testing the boundless patience of my lovely wife) it would certainly be tempting to pick up another Weissach!

I have heard they are a pretty good car for the street, too!

If you buy it...please lower it as soon as possible. Unless you live near a flood plain.

The leather has been pulled off the dash. Regarding the carpeting, it is the original red, the reason it looks maroon is because of the flash.

why does a car with 75K on the clock need to be "restored"? It always bugs me how that term is tossed about....it is pretty much meaningless. What was "restored"? Repaint? All the rubber? Why was the engine rebuilt at that low miles? Or the tranny for that matter?
