MAF Updgrade? User Experience
I'm considering installing a Mass Air Flow system on my '87 911 this year and am interested in hearing from those who have made this upgrade. Was it a good investment?

BUMP to the top.
I'd like to hear from some that have done it too! |
Gentlemen - if you use the search feature at the bottom of the page I think you will find a lot of reading on this subject
Hint - I have a MAF on my 87 Carrera and think it is a mod worth doing. |

ZCAT3,
Could you elaborate? Joe |
All right guys - by merely going to the bottom of the page and typing MAF into the search box got over 100 relevant threads. Here is one (that references a few others):

Can anyone explain or refer me to a link that explains why an MAF produces more power than the stock system? I don't dispute it, just don't understand the physical reason for the increased power.
thanks... |
I just bought one today and have not installed it yet.
The MAF replaces the barn door air flow meter. The MAF consists of a singe thin wire (hot wire) instead of the restrictive barn door. If you check out Bruce Anderson's book lists actual horsepower gains using the MAF. |
Which MAF did you get? Will it allow adjustments? Cost?
Oh, by the way, how will you get it to smog or are they that ignorant down there? Joe |
My 3.2 is in a 1973 914.
It's smog exempt for now. I bought my maf at Pro-flow Its 80mm and it includes an adjuster. It cost $925 Steve |
They also have a 75mm one that's non adjustable for $699

I've run a Hutley adjustable MAF for the past 3 years. It is full adjustable at idle, med, high and acceleration. Its hard to say how fast it is compared to a stock 911 since I haven't driven one for a long time. My track experience in chasing down cars is one area that tells me its running good, especially with later model cars. The torque and hp are still at the top end of the rev's, to the point that the car almost feel turbocharged. The power feels incremental all the way to redline. Adding Steve W's chip in addition has also helped. Do they work? Yes. If they didn't, they would'nt of switched to these in the 993's. What convinced me is that if you club race and have one of these, you get bumped up 2 classes.

I'll take a picture of my kit when it shows up.
I have a Euro 3.2 in my 914. It does not have an oxygen sensor. Is an oxygen sensor required to adjust the MAF? Steve |
