74 Targa Resurrected - Original Restoration
I bought a 74 911 Targa as a basket case for $500 a few years ago. My initial thought was bigger engine, bigger flairs, bigger tires and so on. But after thinking about it, I decided I wanted to keep the narrow body and engine all original - to have it just as Porsche had intended. So I went for an original restoration, but that doesn't mean that the weak areas of the engine weren't addressed, which meant a high quality rebuild. Here are the particulars.
Starting with the basic "non S" original engine: Machine shop work by German Precision - beautiful work Lined bored, oil bypass mod, cylinder heads done with all new valves, case savers, rockers rebuilt, cylinder bases on the cases and other misc items. RS pistons & cylinders S Cams S heads S CIS from Europe Carrera tensioners 3.2 oil pump Pertronix Added front oil cooler New India/Indian 027 paint job. Base coat / clear coat. Unbolted everything I could before the paint job. New rubber and stainless hardware when going back together. It originally had a puke brown, I believe they called it cork interior. I bought a pair of gray seats from the Parts Heaven swap meet, so I recovered everything in gray vinyl with black carpet. Everything in the brake system is new. Gotta love those manual brakes. Another narrow body lives.

PorschePilot,
Great looking car - I too am in the middle of an engine rebuild, paint, and new interior. I envy that yours is on the road. Good job, and thanks for keeping another mid year stock. Rex

Very nice! I don't need to know the exact amount, but how did you fare financially-or should I ask? $500 seems like a good price to the non-enlightened part of our country, but we here all know that is just the surface.

awesome! another mid-year save and a '74 to boot!
guess you kept the 7:31 ring & pinion? bet it hauls balls..no chance you dynoed the engine to see what you're making now? hoe does the cis handle your rs pistons..what's the compression ratio now? no lobe overlap issues?ryan

To answer the question about the RS pistions, the compression is 9.5 to 1 and they work fine with the S cams and heads. I bought a rebuilt fuel distributor that made for a euro 3.0. Once the mixture was set it runs great. My car seems to pull stronger in the 3K to 5K range than my friends 79 3.0, which I have driven many times.

be interesting to see what a 2.7 cis motor with those mods dynoed at..i'd really love to know..we never see much 2.7 cis data posted on the board. you might consider tbitz' efi system even..i hear it works fabulous on our 2.7's..

My Bonanza is a 1960 M model. It has a IO-520 in it instead of the original 0-470. I also put in an updated instrument panel.
The EFI system is $1600 and I seem to have my CIS dialed in.

Man, that car is so beautful. Bravo!! My dream is to do what you just did - restore an old basket case 911 to better than new condition. I just can't get over how sweet she looks!
