Just swapped alternators...now car won't fire.

Hi,

I have a 3 liter motor in my 72T. The alternator went bad, so I got a whole new fan/alternator combo. I marked the wires and took pics, and hooked everything back up to the right spots. Now the car turns over, but won't fire. Any thoughts?

Thanksm

mto

Check for loose/disconnected wires (including wire from the coil to the center post of the distributor cap) at the coil and distributor. Jim

Did you hook up the ground inside the alternator to fan?

yep...all the wires are hooked up. I hate the feeling that I missed one, but I'm pretty positive that I hooked 'em all up.

Are you getting Spark to the plugs ??
Fuel pump on ?

Did you disconnect the battery when replacing the Alternator ?

Did you ground or short anything while replacing the Alternator you could have blown a fuse or a relay ?

Just some things to check

The car will run with the alternator disconnected. The problem must lie somewhere else.

Did you crack the coil re-attaching it?

How about the fuel pump relay. Just a thought.

Sorry to hijack your thread, but where does the ground hook up to the alternator? I pulled mine off without checking.

I meant, which bolt do I use on the alternator? I know where all the others connect I just missed this one.

BTW: You encouraged me to get my fan and shroud powder coated. Looks great. I post some pics later.

Here's a question for you guys: I painted and clearcoated my fan and housing. Could it be that the coil isn't getting properly grounded, so it's not working? Because it's sitting on paint, instead of metal?

Id say its a good bet behind the plate i would scuff up the area where you ground those wires .

Porsche Crest

The coil doesn't depend on the fan housing for ground ... there is a braided ground strap tying the coil, distributor, and CDI-unit together in the engine wiring harness.

Hey fellahs...I got it! As it turns out, it was the battery all along. I bought an Odyssey 925, relocated it to the passenger side, rewired everything, and she fired right up after coughing for a bit! I guess it was just sitting too long. Sorry to waste the bandwidth, and your time.

Thanks to everyone.
