Porsche Garage ready for the steel door...

Ready for the garage door....anyone know a distributor of steel paneled doors that sells direct? I will do the install myself.

The locals all wanna sell me a Clopay for 1200+ USD .....16x9 is the size I need......

BTW, the estimates I have been getting....have included a Genie 1/2 hp opener...all for a bend over price of $400+ USD.....are they THAT much better than the Craftsman at $179???

Hi Mike,

Just went through this last year, put a new O-head door in the garage. I used to be a contractor and the best price I could find (and that's if I re-activated an old account and got the contactor's discount) was about $700 for a 16'X8', steel panel door. My best advice is find a local garage door installer (or 2 or 3) and let him (them) bid the job. That's what I did and got a better door (fully insulated with steel skin inside) AND a Chamberlin (commercial model) belt drive opener INSTALLED for $850 (he even removed and hauled away the old door). A door the same quality would have been $1000, my cost; I would have had to wait 4-6 weeks for it (special order), install it and still go buy a new opener.

Good luck,

BTW, openers are all pretty much the same (IMHO) but a 1/2 HP model is heavier duty and will last longer than the "on sale" "homeowner's special's" with only 1/4 or 1/3 HP.

Mike,

Check out the Depot for a Wayne Dalton 16x9, it might take 2-3 weeks to get but you can install your self. They also sell some quality 1/2-3/4 hp door closers for about 225-275.00.

Something you might consider.
I am very happy with it. Lets great light in like a service station door.
aluminum, insulated, purchased at Menards for about a 1,000 bucks.
Inside I installed race deck on the floor and gladiator cabinets. Craftsman 1/2 hp opener.

Cool

I guess that I'm really cheap.

I get my doors as take offs.

I stay in touch from time to time with a large local door installer. He has doors that were taken out of newly constucted homes because they were the wrong color or a panel was dented. etc.

I have bought complete 8X9 panel doors for a little as $75 apiece. The panels may need to be painted etc.

This is a good approach if you are going to customize one of these doors anyway.

Good luck,
David Duffield

Mike,

I just completed my Porsche Stable and opted not to use a Clopay door on my separate garage. In Palm Beach County we have very strict hurricane code. I ended up using an Amarr door which was 18x8 for $1190 installed. Good product, good price.

As for installing it yourself, I'd reconsider. It's a pain in the ass for the most talented of craftsman. Let them install it for the $100. Here's a couple of before and aftershots. Left to right '92 C2 Turbo , '86 Cab, and '70/'86 Turbo. Good luck with it.

Mike,

I agree with the gentlemen from FL. putting up these doors is a MAJOR PITA.

I am sure you can handle the openers though
You make me sick with that damn ocean view
