door striker bolt tool?
a little help please...
So the plastic in the door striker on the drivers side of my 73.5 targa has cracked, and i want to replace it. The bolts holding the striker on are 12 pointed stars. Does anyone know what the proper tool is? I figure a six pointed hex or torx could do the job, but they just don't seem all that tight in the bolt head. I'd prefer not to ruin my day by stripping the head... thanks for any help, jason |

I bought a set of 12-point wrenches at the local auto parts store (Schucks) for $15, and have seen them around elsewhere. You should be able to find one without too much effort.

Jason,
Some people call them 'triple-square' ... but the propor term is Polygon Drive or XZN Drive Bit. The screws are a European aerospace standard from the 1960's. M12 and M10 sizes are commonly used on flywheels, and somewhat infrequently on CV-joints in M10 and M8 sizes. In the USA, automotive stores often carry Lisle tools for specialty applications, and the M8 tool is sold as a VW tool, since their CV-joints used that size starting in 1967. Metric & Multistandard used to carry the full range of bits in Stallwille brand.

I think I got mine from Stoddard.

I have to admit a large allen wrench worked perfectly for me, not sure of the size though...It fit perfectly with no play, so didn't have any problems with rounding out the bolt head. Best of all, it was already in my tool box!

Make sure you have the "triple square" tool before you try to remove the bolts - I used a hex allen wrench and it did a fine job of stipping out the recess. As I remeber it, the new bolts were something like $8 each from Stoddard's.
The correct tool is available from your local Snap-On tool truck and is much cheaper than the new bolts. Jim |
