Help with starting
Some of you may know that I have been having issued with my car starting. Well I followed some advice on this board I checked my battery and cleaned some electrical connections but my car still wouldn't start. Today I finally get to work on the car again. So I took the air filter and snorkel off and pushed up on the sensor plate. I then tried to start the car again. This time it started and ran for few seconds before it cut off. So I tried it again and it ran a little longer, third time and it still ran a little longer than before. That's when I quit to make this post. Why would pushing up on the sensor plate cause the car to actually start and run for a few seconds? Also what steps should I take now to get the car started again. Obviously I can keep pushing the sensor plate up, but what should I do next? Is that a mixture problem?
Thanks in advance Ryan

ok it started
Well, I pushed up on the sensor plate a 3 more times, after the third try it started. I just drove it around for awhile and here's my thoughts. In first gear the gas is very sensitive, you have to give it just the right amount for anything to happen to much and it almost like its getting flooded. I just stopped, and I am going to go out and try to start it again in a minute. Any one have any thoughts as to what is up with my car?
Thanks Ryan

Not an expert by any means but I will say that the car is too lean. Have you done any fiddling with the CIS lately?
Same symptoms I had with my car after replacing the airbox.. a couple of turns of the 3mm hex nut solved the problem.

if there is an air leak somewhere after the sensor plate, that would cause the sensor plate not to open correctly.

if you have any carb cleaner you can spray it around the intake, airbox and hoses and listen for the idle speed to change...if it does you have vacuum leak somewhere...CIS depends on correct vacuum to work correctly. raising the air sensor plate may be compensating for a vacuum leak. if you find and fix the leak, you'll want to re-adjust the plate.

If everything else is correct (spark, timing, fuel pressure etc) then the adjustment should only be be done with a gas tester with 1/8 turns at a time max.
You can't "tune-by ear" very easily, and people have hydrolocked CIS engines by turning the adjustment screw too agressively- mark it and write down the %# of turn just to be on the safe side. The adjustment is hard to go out of whack so there's probably something else affecting the engine. A bottle of Techron(to clean) with a spike of Marvelous Mystry oil (to lube) will help out the fuel system before testing. |
