another brake upgrade question

I need to know the following:

I have a 76 with a turbo body conversion. I was wondering what will I need if I wanted to upgrade my car with the 993 brake's. I have 17" RUF rims on the car. I know that I will have to get different rotors, but I need some one to tell me what parts I will have to buy. Let me know what the part is and what year car it comes from. My mechanic can get me parts dirt cheap, but needs to know the year the part comes from. I have searched the archives, but since I know very little about the diff't brakes it's all greek to me. My wife's 95' 993 brake's work good and look good. What will I need?

thanks

If using 993 front calipers you want either '78-'80 930 front rotors
  • 930 0351 047 00
  • 930 0351 048 00
these are 304x32mm

or '96 993tt 2 piece front rotors
  • 993 351 425 10
  • 993 351 426 10
these are 322x32mm

Either will need custom hats and caliper adapters specific to the rotor used. The oem hats are not available and so must be purchased from VCI, Rennsport Systems et al. The 993tt rotors are ~ 50% of the cost of the 930s which wholesale for ~$235 a side.

In the back the rotors to use are
  • 930 0352 045 00
  • 930 0352 046 00
these are 309x28mm

the calipers to use w/ them are 965 rears
  • 965 352 421 02
  • 965 352 422 02
these are black

or
  • 965 352 421 12
  • 965 352 422 12
these are red

Stock 993 rear calipers will only fit the 930 rotors if the pads are ground down, it is highly recommended to use the correct 965 parts.

I'm trying to set up a similar system, unfortunately the 965 rear calipers seem to be pretty rare. Any other rears work?:(

Ouch. That can get expensive in a hurry. I'm glad my car is still more than I can handle.

Kahuna, as I tried to say(though my typing skills seem to have deteriorated a lot lately, I guess that is what editing is for) the stock 993 rears can be used but are too narrow, the solution is to grind 2mm off each of the rear pads.

I may have an extra set of 965 rears in a few weeks. PM me.

jazzbass, try pricng some of the bigger pads

Bill, What would I need if I want to go w/ the 993TT brake's. I can get at a good price, but would need to know the same info on the rotors needed. Also would I be able to get the mounting bracket's for them anywhere for a good price? another question, I work at a machine shop and can get mill's if needed. How hard is it to make the bracket's myself.

It's easier for me to get one caliper at a time on payday instead of buying the whole kit at once. This way I can have all the parts by February and assemble in the dead of Ohio's winter.

Thanks
Oscar

The 993tt calipers will use the same front rotors/hats as above but different, taller adapters. The pads are ~10mm taller than the N/A 993 pads. You will need a min. of 8x17 wheel w/ this setup.

In the back the stock 993tt rotors can be used on modified 993tt calipers. The caliper mod is to machine off the axial mounting ears and machine in radial mounts. The calipers is then mounted ala the fronts w/ an axial to radial adapter. This is not a trivial undertaking, and is not cheap. The parking brake will need to be modified to work in the 993tt rear rotor as well. For the above reasons I recommend the 965 rear calipers modified like this

If you look carefully you can see the outline of the original axial bolt washer. The rotor is stock 930 rear, w/ the backing plate removed. Parking brake remains stock w/ this setup.

I have no idea of pricing, You can contact Steven at Imagine for individual adapters. Wayne here at Pelican sells a very nice kit that uses the full 993tt setup, just bolt it on. The kit is a good deal if you want the full 993tt setup. I have priced out wholesale prices on the whole 993tt thing and the cost of machining. There is not that much profit margin in the kits.
