Burn outs are fun, but break stuff....

At the autofest I had some fun doing burnouts in Frankensteen with my new 150hp Type IV motor.....found out I have an LSD in there, never thought to check that a 1965 transmission would have one.

Anywho, did some cool 60 foot burns with both tires spinning the 245s under the bolt on Frankensteen flares. After getting home I heard some clunking noises.....new trans rebuild time.....

Since I have NO idea how long it has been since anyone has been inside the box, I figure it needed it anyways. Problem is, this trans is gonna be a "little" more expensive than the 901s that I have pulled apart before.

Guess I will have to wait until the clutch is fully extnded before hammering it down.....

Burnouts? :)

So, burnouts breal porsches? I have this 425 HP 930, and I've been dying to see what it will run the 1/4 mile in. My neighbors have a hot rod honda they say will eat my 930 up. I'm afraid to really just sidestep the clutch like I can in my AMX. Will I break things by dumping the clutch at 5-6000 rpm? I have 295's on the back too. I feel I have to defend Porsche against the rice down the street....

I only applied enough to break it loose. I did not side slip, but revved to 3500 and "popped" the clutch.....

Great launch but obviously too much for a 40 year old trans....

Wasn't "no burnouts" covered in the Porsche 101 class?

Mikey, can you fit a 901 out of an early 911 in there instead of the 356 tranny? You'd loose the LSD but prolly save some $$$$.
This may be a stupid question, but it's one I've never seen before.

I wouldn't dump the clutch at 5-6000 ... that would nuke the rear end. Instead, go for a more conservative 2500 RPM launch. With the turbo all you need to do is have it spooled when you side step ... but don't worry, you'll eat those rice burners regardless.

You might want to avoid the burnout box, however.

NOTE: I used to drag race my 914 with a 2.2S w/Webbers ... I ran a consistent 13.5 in the 1/4 with a 2200 RPM launch and shifting at 7200.

I did a burnout in my 911 and stripped the slines on the axle. Water had wicked in there and rusted them. Burnouts locate weak points. They're a good thing.

In that case, sure, they're a good thing. But you wouldn't be saying this if in addition to finding your axles, that you busted your r/p, over-cooked a gear, or bent your axles entirely, which would not happen had you not done a burnout.

THAT involves moving the torsion bar tube and A LOT of welding......not ready to that.

I peeled out big time only once when I was angry, and spun those 205s (or at least one of them ) for about 50-60 feet. I blew my 1st gear synchro hub not long after.

I had the box totally rebuilt (at great expense) and it's fantastic. I worship my sweet-shifting 915 and know that it won't launch the way my old 928 5-speed used to...

And with that, as my friend Adam testifies, I rest my case...

In my last Porsche I occasionally would rev it up to about 2500 and let the clutch out hard, nailing it as as soon as it engaged. This would result in two black marks for almost as long as I wanted to stay in it. Not bad for a 901, but I only did this in 2nd gear, never 1st
I'd never dream of doing that with my SC, not that it would be able to.
After all, it has two fewer cylinders.

I would think the 930 trans would take anything you could throw at them.

Before the swap my 3.0L would haze the 345s out back through first gear by simply letting out the clutch off idle THEN smashing the gas. Left 2 light 13" wide marks for about 20 feet. Clutch looked fine when removed during the swap.

Yes, the 930 transmission should be able to handle lots of stuff. I don't think you'll have a problem unless you run slicks, have a pre-existing problem, or have 650+ hp.

My first car, '65 Impala with a 4 on the floor and 4.11 gears, it would make some serious smoke. I still have a spot in my heart for the smell of roasted tire.
