Sad Days are here. Where do I sell my car?
Well it's the end of a (sports car) era. First the Alpine II, then the V6 Alpine V project, then the "plastic" Speedster 2110, and now the 911. I suppose I should count myself lucky to this point - and I've got a wonderful boy and another on the way.
But for this reason I feel I should sell my favorite car yet. It truly sits in the garage so long it gets flat spots in the tires. I feel guilty looking at it - and paying the insurance and registration. Thank for letting me lament here. My question is, besides Pelican, what's the latest greatest site to put my ad? Do people still use Yahoo and Traderonline? Here's a link to my ad. http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/classifieds/classifieds.cgi?search_and_display_db_button=on&db_id=1823&query=retrieval Thanks, Tim

I don't think your car will sell anywhere for that kind of jack. It's a soft market right now & not a good time to be selling. If you really want to sell your car, drop $4k from the price, if not hang on to it untill the market rebounds. Just my half a nickels worth.

Tim, from you description of the car I think it is priced more than fairly.
Having said that remember that the only thing that sets the price, especially on a used car, is a willing buyer and a willing seller. Whoever buys that car should be able to put another 100K on it without a major expense. |

The place I had the best luck when selling my 97 Targa was on the PCA website and in the PCA mag. This produced the most serious buyers. I also created my own website and placed ads on Rennlist, Pelican, Autotrader (waste of money), and Washington post (complete waste of money!). I believe the buyer finally saw my ad on Rennlist.
Oh yeah, every buyer told me my car was way overpriced too, I held my price and it took over 6 months to sell. This was the spring after 9/11 too. You have a beautiful car and it the price sounds fair to me. -Dan

I sold my 944 in 2 days using free classifieds. I posted on Pelican and Rennlist classified sections. Since I am a PCA member, I also posted on the National and the local PCA sites. Still had people coming over for a test drive as I was taking the deposit from the new buyer.
I had real good luck with those free sites. Or essentially free: Pelican asks for $10 (based on the honor system) if you sell their car through their classifieds. Mine, however, sold through exposure from the PCA ad. Good luck, Tom

Thanks for the input. The price range of these cars is very interesting, but then so is the quality range and location. If it doesn't sell my heart won't be broken - though it'd be good to have a sob story about the car I miss a few years or so from now when I go for my glass top Targa - or early series, or...

REDUCED
Just reduced the price to $15k. Seems more in line with the other Targas out there.
Thanks

In my humble opinion, the price is way too high for an 81 Targa with 120K on the chasis and 10K on a rebuild. I believe that you will have a difficult time selling this car for any more than $12K tops.

Tim, are you a PCA member? if so, get a PCA valuation done...best of luck...an no, the market ISN'T soft IMO for a nice 911...I almost sold mine for $15,500, but finally just couldn't do it...

Tim-
sorry to hear about your decision, but you have to do what's right for you. FWIW, my seven-year old son absolutely loves driving around in my '85 Targa. Its gotten to the point that he spots Porsches on the road faster than I do! If you do sell it, remember you can always buy another when the time is right. If you keep it, strap the little guy in the front seat (no airbags) and have some quality time with your son.

Tim, Reduced to $15k?? That's an "I don't really want to sell this thing, but if the right crackhead comes along, what the hell", kind of price. Sad fact, but '81 targas w/ 100k+miles are $10k cars, if they're nice, these days. I decided that my '82 coupe cannot be sold for this reason, so now I am enjoying it. Good luck and congrats on the babies!

Disagree with you Speeder. $10k may be the price for a car with 120k miles and no rebuild. The rebuild pumps it back up. I wouldn't sell a car with a fresh rebuild for $10k unless I was desperate.

My $.02, if you are selling it because you need the cash that's one thing. If it's just because you don't have time for it right now, hold on to it. It's like a stock...in this market hold on to it because in the next year or two you'll have a car that will have appreciated from today's prices. To get rid of it because it is just taking up garage space is a good way to sell you rig at rock bottom prices.

TimB,
Don't forget craigslist.com. I found my Porsche in Berkeley on that site as well as my 4Runner. I've sold three cars on same site also. All of these transactions occured this year since March. I'm buying another Porsche, this time for my wife, this weekend. The seller found me here on PP after I posted a question regarding 87 - 89 Carreras so you should get good exposure. By the way, I bought my '79 for $13K because it was the best example I could find at the time. There are quite a few targas out there now that are cheaper but, most likely, can't hold a candle to yours. Good luck! You're gonna miss that beautiful car. |
