Broken Rear defroster traces

My rear defroster is not working because all the traces on the glass appear to have breaks in them somewhere along the line. I have no continuity between one side and the other. Short of installing a new rear window, is there a way to fix this? A search of the forum foudn a reference to using some silver conductive paint to touch up the broken locations. Since all the traces are broken, I am looking for a total replacement.

I think you are looking at replacement glass. I do not believe you can replace only the defrost grid.

I have repaired these broken traces in the past using the conductive paint with great results (after many years it still works fine). This can be found at the local Napa around here. To find the brake use a volt meter and find the discontinuity on each line.

hi,

conductive paint works fine for small scratches in the wires, but most of the time the wires are 'burnt out' after a couple of years (especially when having run 'dry' at different times). moreover, it's quite a gym training hanging in the back of the car and 'painting' those wires over head.
most effective: replacement glass.

Here's an article on testing and repairing the rear defroster grid. Sounds pretty time consuming, but probably a lot cheaper than replacing the glass:

Tanks everyone for your input. I will try to find the paint this weekend and give it a try. If that does not work, I will probably just live with the problem.
