Replacing deck lid struts
 

The front and rear deck lid struts need replaced on my '95 Cab. I found the parts here but am wondering about the installation. Is it a job an average Joe (or Jim) can do? I've handy enough but have have my car for a few weeks and have no special tools. Anyone here done it before?

Unless it's more difficult on a 993 than it is on an '88 then you can do it no problem.

One of those simple, yet sometimes frustrating jobs. All you have to do is remove a clip on the end of a small post, change out the strut, and put the post and clip back in. Sounds easy, but between my fat fingers and a location that requires a bit of a contortionist, it can be a bit frustrating. I did all four on my car in about 45-50 minutes. I am slow.

I'd rate this job 1 scraped knuckle, and two smilies. Very nice when done. No more broomstick holding up the hood!

I agree with what the previous posters said. In addition, make sure you get the weltmeister heavy duty struts. They do a much better job holding the lids up.

Danskman, I know what you mean. Most jobs take twice as oong as they should. But working on my Porsche, I think I'll have fun anyways!!

I just did my 2 rear struts & had to compress them a couple inches between a floor jack & a piano, secure them with tie wire, then wrap a couple of huge zip ties around them to get them to fit. The hardest part of the whole thing was getting the dikes in to cut the zip ties.

Are the HD just more durable, or do they have more 'lifting' power?

The HD struts have more lifting power. With a tail you need two regular struts, or one HD. Two regular are preferrable - the HD is very difficult to compress enough, and keep compressed, to install.

just did mine last weekend. try using a pair of hemostats to hold the clips, less that $10 at the hardware store. clamp them on before you pull off the clips and put them on when you reinstall-gives you something to guide the clips back on and if you drop the clip/stat its easy to find.

I have a factory tail & I used 2 HD struts. Now my lid pops up like 18 year old wood. :D

How did you reach the far end of the rear struts? I took a close look at mine and can see the pin and the clip but can't get my hand that far in.

The one on the driver side front is a B!tch.....get the hemostats or a friend with very thin hands.

I have two standard struts on my Turbo tail, and I still need a prop. It won't hold it up at all. I need to get the HD struts.

I need to do the hood struts on my SC (getting sick of the hood hitting me in the head :mad: )

at Pelican. Looking back on my records that came with the car, the fronts were replaced about 5 years ago, so I assume the
difference in price is every 4-5 years with standards or lifetime
with HD's ???

I am amazed that the Porsche manual doesn't suggest pulling the motor to change out the lift supports. I was suprised to see I could work on my door panel without pulling the motor. I've had mine out 8 times so far in 5 years and 10k miles.
Next time I'm using velcro. My supports were easy I just had a postier cervical laminectomy done.

turbo Tie Rods
 

Hi,

I have an 86 coupe I just picked up, previous owner mentioned the turbo tie rod upgrade... Is this worth it? is it something I could do myself if I bought the special wrench with the kit?

The one behind the air intake (passenger rear) seemed most difficult to me. However, if you remove the air filter cover first it will go alot easier.

Myles 719. Since you appear new here I will not berate you for attempting to hijack this thread--especially since the question above seems well answered. To answer your question about the tie rods, yes, it probably is worth it. But it kind of depends on what other mods your car doesn't have as to whether the money might be better spent elsewhere.

hemostats are the tool for the job, very easy just prop the lid up with something while you do it
