Steering Noise/wiper Problem

I have an 83 911SC that now has an annoying (possibly dangerous) steering problem...which might be of my own causing.
I recently removed the steering wheel to get to the wiper switch to try to fix a problem with wipers not switching off. I appeared to have fixed that by fiddling with the switch, but now (sometimes) I get some bad graunching noises from the steering when turning the wheel (mostly if half to full lock). Sometimes it also goes quite heavy, and then comes right. At first I thought it was from the steering wheel (horn contact or wires etc) but I have eliminated that. I just hope like hell I didn't screw the steering rack trying to get the steering wheel nut loosened. I have thought it could be the steering wheel bush, but I don't know as it seems to be OK.
Just to make matters worse, the wiper problem has started up again (not switching off). I think the switch is OK as I checked it against an earlier post that gave the connections and continuity.
The intermittent wipe seems to work OK, so I am thinking it must be the switch/connection in the wiper motor itself. Is there a cover on the motor that is accessible without removing the motor?
