996 engine/trans swap into pre-89 911?

I did a search to see if this has been covered but came up with nothing...has this been done?

I imagine it would be alot of work b/c its a water pumper, but if chevy engines are being dropped into 911's who knows...

Anyone here done it or know of someone that has?

There was an article in Excellence a while back about this type of swap. Kelly Moss motorsports did it.

I talked to a guy (getting a part owns a porsche wrecking yard) who's buddy tried it on a speedster (89) and was willing to see it through regardless, but eventually just gave up. Apparently, it requires cutting the body of the car (backseat area) and lots of other goodies. From what I understand, it's far more trouble than it would make any sense to do--

Thats too bad...I came across one for less than $8000 so I figured, I'd look into it...

There were plans for BB1 to be resurected with a 996 engine but I've not heard any more recent news. Dave (Tre Cup) any updates?

This is off- topic but: I am thinking of putting a 996 engine in a 1997 Maxum 25 ft. cruiser. Coupling to the outdrive doesn't appear to be a huge issue. Cooling the "through the transom" exhaust is the largest issue. I think the 996 power plant will be spectacular for a boat. Typically in a boat you get out of the harbor crank it up to plane and stay around the same RPM, perfect for a Porsche engine. 996 engines are a dime a dozen, I bought this one with 13K verified miles for $5300.00. It included the harness/brain. I have seen a 996 engine in a rail buggy and one in a Boxster.

EXACTLY, that's why someone has to have done this like the 3.6 IMO...before I do upgrades like cam/PMOs/etc. I figured I'd look into this option b/c there's everywhere...

And you should give Atty. Robert Miller a call in Bel Air MD before you blow your money at Sanford & Son.

My mechanic has one sitting in a corner. I keep thinking....300HP....but there's the oil sump issue that people decry on these forums and I stop.

Is there anyway that you can work this out with Steve? I just cringe everytime I see people bash each other here. Didn't Steve offer to come and get the engine or help you fix the problem? Why not try emailing him directly?
Again, sorry you had a bad experience,

James

is this issue THAT bad? I mean 300+HP for $5000-8000 in pre-89 would be nice...

The issue is so bad ! It is almost impossible to find a 98/99 996 with original Engine . Also dont mix up a 996/ Boxster and a GT3 /Turbo Engine . The High-Output Engines from Porsche are still using 964/993
Engine-Cases and Cranks ,therefore you have the Old Pattern for the GearboxBolts and the GT3 has a more simple Motronic ,especially the first ( 99 ) series .And for 8000$ you find a 993 Engine with Chip and about 300 HP , less Headaches on the Conversion and NO WATER .

Thanks Harald...

wow they were that bad, huh? I can't imagine spending all that money on a 996 and the engines crap...german engineering at it's finest, huh? LOL

I thought about this some more and I know the renegades like Porchev make a front mounted radiator (like the oil cooler) and no cutting is involved in the gas tank/body, etc. so I was planning to go that route if I went to a water pumper 996...

still, I imagine this problem has been taken care of in most of the engines out there with the records (like our pop-off valve, tensioners, etc. needing to be done) so these engines can still be had for $5000 is what makes them tempting, the cooling assembly from Porchev is under $1000...so your into a 996 engine setup for under $8000 total is why I'm liking it...vs $10+ on the 993 engines from what I've seen...

I'll probably have to call Kelly Moss and get more info...
