Wish me luck! - Targa Tasmania 2003 Tarmac Rally (ADDED SOME PICS AT END)
I need some 911 luck!
We're off to Melbourne tomorrow then a big boat ride to Australia's island state of Tasmania to compete in Targa Tasmania 2003. For all you non-Aussies, Targa Tas is a 6 day tarmac rally with 5 of those days each having about 10 closed road special stages ranging from 2 to 50 kms in length. The road is cleared for each special stage and its helmets on, no speed limits, off you go. We are taking my 1970 911 (now 2.7 Carrera RS replica) and are entered in the Classic Competition (there is also Historic and Modern). Cars are also grouped by age, capacity and modifications. There are 260+ teams this year ranging from a 1926 Amilcar to a 2003 Ultima. The entry list makes amazing reading. PORSCHE is the no.1 entered marque (again) with a bunch of 356's, heaps of early - mid 911's, 993 RSCS's, GT3's and about 6 twin turbo GT2's... The site is www.targa.org.au and they will have live results (and pics) posted from Monday 12 May. To check how we are going search for any of: Driver: CURNICK Co-driver: WINTER Car #: 448 Cheers - Ryan Last edited by obrut; 05-22-2003 at 02:59 PM.. |

Yeah Ryan! - good luck!!!!
The road is cleared for each special stage and its helmets on, no speed limits, off you go. With pace notes, right! I think I might enter the one-day (120km timed, 190km touring) event here in NZ on the 29th of June. That is the weekend before I get married, and I see it as a "Stag event". But I might have to work.... that would suck. Have fun, don't break you or the car!

Cam - yep, we have full professionally prepared pace notes for all the competitive stages (260 pages in total!). I've only used road books before so ts like learning another language - as you go...
Tre - oh yes, many cheesy pics to follow... ps: database part of the site will be under the ENTRANTS button - but we have no time left to post much on it before we go. pps: mantra - 8/10ths, 8/10ths...

For those of us in the states who haven't read of this event? It's similar to competing in the old Mille Miglia..As close as you can be to being "Jenks", navigating for "Stirling"..

I'll be watching, Ryan! Talk about one of the premier (Porsche) Motorsport events you can do.
Good Luck and be careful!

Jim Richards to clean up in the 996T? The master is hard to beat at this event.
Good luck Ryan, keep it on the black stuff. Watch out for DDR in RX7, he has a hot steerer Dean Linstrum with him this year. stuart |

Good Luck, Make sure you post pictures when you get back
I'm trying to swing doing the Targa Newfoundland this year, Last year it was won by a couple from down under. I really want to do it, looks like a blast.

I saw the Targa Newfoundland on Speed Channel last week. Looked like a great time. Someone from down under cleaned up in a wild 60's fully prepared Mustang while a 993 turbo blew up chasing it!
Good Luck and please post pictures!!

Quick Update:
Back from Tasmania - car is pretty much intact. We had to leave before the presentation dinner but have been unofficially informed that we achieved our Targa plate (primary goal after not destroying car) and should also pick up a class win. Wild event - unbelievable rain - will report more when recovered... Cheers - Ryan |

Awesome! Just finishing is a whole step better than my last effort! Presumably Targa plate means you finished all stages inside the minimum? Good driving!!
