Windshield Replacement Issue

Hi,

The windshield I purchased to replace the one on my car was destroyed by building workmen who came to paint the iron bars on my balcony. The windshield was against the window overlooking the balcony opposite the railing and should not have interfered with the work; and I had offered to remove it before they started in any case. The building construction manager conceded they were responsible and offered to reimburse me for the full replacement value, provided I give him some kind of receipt that reflects the purchase price. Unfortunately, I have no receipt since the glass was acquired in trade with another Porsche owner with whom I have since lost contact. Is there any way somebody could provide me with some kind of "receipt" for the windshield that notes the price. I would really appreciate it. It's a 1986 w/ antenna. If anybody has any other ideas, please let me know.

Thanks!

Can't you get/print a price from a catalog or web site selling that same windshield? That should provide proof of it's value.

I suppose I could try that, but I guess they want proof of purchase? I probably need some kind of invoice. Is it standard procedure to ask for a receipt in cases like this? If all else fails I'm going to take it to small claims, but I'm hoping to avoid that if it's only a question of a piece of paper. Hell, I could probably make one on my computer.

The point is replacement cost versus what you paid for it. You might have paid $100 five years ago; but today it costs $500 to replace. I suggest you go to your friendly neighborhood Porsche dealer and have them print out a quote. You could as well get quotes from local glass installers. Show the guy a couple of quotes, ask for a check.

I second Don's statement. You don't need a receipt from the broken part, but one from the replacement part. A word of warning, a windshield from the dealer will likely be about $900.

A German replacement windshield with the proper tint and antenna is around $875.

Exactly what the others said. You do not need to have reciepts for everything that you already own, what if the w/s had been installed in your car?? Replacement cost is the only relevant factor.

ANd although dealer list price is outrageous, glass dealers sell new windshields for much less, (~$2-300), don't bend the guy over. Just be fair and I'm sure that he'll pay right up. It wasn't even a new w/s, right?

I was quoted $700 from a good local glass shop for windshield and installation on 1989 Carrera with antenna in the windshield.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll get a couple estimates and send them over to him. True, it wasn't new.
