Speedo issues
 

Since I got the car, the odometer hasn't been working. Not a worry at first b/c from the tech articles it seemed like the worm gears were the crux, which was superceded by more pressing items. Now the speedo stopped too, which makes it more of a problem.

My question is: if the speedo worked by itself, is there any certain areas that I should check first before going for the full rebuild? I've read other posts, but they seem too technical for now. They will be relavant once I open it up, but for now I'd like to know whether there are certain superficial things to examine to narrow down the speed indicator problem.
