worn cam
I have a question to ask on this board. So far other BBS haven't given me a good answer. Beside you guys are great in helping me with my 911T.
I just recently acquired a MBZ 420sel with 120k miles. The mechanic states that a passenger side cam is worn and several of the lobes of the cam are not round anymore and getting flatter. What does worn cam do to the car performance and can it cause valve problems necessitating a valve job later on? I brought the car to him because a chain was loose and he needed to change out the chain and the chain rail. This is one of those "while one is in there" job. Again, I am willing to spend the money if it were justified. Also, do after market cams are as good as OEM. Can cam be regrind? Thanks, John |

Yes the cam can be reground. Performance wise, it can affect the car tremendously. Cams control your valves directly, if your cams are flattening, that means that your valves are'nt going to lift properly to there normal maximum lift. So as they flatten, the power on that bank of the motor will suffer. And cams are treated with a hardening process to harden the surface, once it breaks, they do nothing but wear until they are replaced or reground and rehardened.

John,
Web-Cam can regrind your cam(s) ... at relatively low cost. http://www.webcamshafts.com/mercedes-auto.html
