How check the fresh air blower pre 73 car

Hi all,

Can anyone tell me a quick way to check to see if the fresh air blower is working or not. I have power to it but cannot work out if the blower is faulty or the dash control panel.

Does the dash control panel act as the earth for each setting, i.e. if I earth the different cables at the blower end then would that indicate that the blower is faulty.

Thanks

Alan.UK

Alan have you tried "hard wiring" the fan from the battery? This cuts out the switch and you'll be able to see if the fan spins.

My blower got jammed on some muck that found its way into the assembly, try detaching a hose and spinning the fan with your fingers a bit and see if this is the problem.

Hi Luke,

How's life in London today?

On ignition the fan does have a live wire to it, hence maybe the idea of cutting out the dash switch by earthing the circuit out at the blower. I ram being lazy and didn't want to take it out; there are plenty of other jobs to do. I guess I should do as you say and take a closer look at it and the dash controls.

Cheers

London goes well, am splitting my day equally between the Pelican BBS, World Cup rugby and work, boss hasn't noticed yet!

Good luck with the investigation, btw I have a spare heater control assmbley for a 1972 car in Ringwood if it turns out you need one. One knob is missing and the funky 6 (i think) pin connector has been cut off but it's yours if you want it

The fan on my 69E uses a constant positive, with a varied ground for the different speeds.....took a while to figure THAT out.

I took mine out of it's case, found that the brushes weren't fully contacting the commutator portion of the armature (the spinny stuff)...a few applications of force with a pair of pliers, and the blower started working again.

I had one burn out on me...evidently, the "permanent" lube used on the blower motor was a misnomer. I wired in a replacement from a "wrecked-em" yard. On the controls? Use them from time to time, and clean the controls with electronic "contact cleaner"...

Could be worse, I know my blower works, but I've got no idea what its supposed to be doing, because it doesn't seem to blow air anywhere I can find!

I've also yet to figure out why the vent at the top of the hood seems to collect air and blow it directly through the defroster vents on the dash no matter how I futz with all the nobs and things on the dash. Gets damn cold these days at night!
