Roll Bar
I have a safety devices roll bar that i'm installing. Problem is that the b@stard is one tight fit. As anyone else had problems getting one of these things in? I noticed i have slight gaps on the left side mount shoe attatched to the bar.

My Autopower bar is very tight in my SC. You want it tight. What do you mean by gap?

I'll see if i can locate some pics to post to explain the issue. But basically the front shoes that bolt to the plates that are welded to the chassis are what i'm concerned about. The left one, although sits flat against it from a horizontal stand point, the front vertical part of the shoe that sits up against the side of the chassis rail has about a 1/4 inch gap while the back of the same side of the shoe sits flush. The right shoe has no problems and sits flat all around. Any ideas?

Most of the bars will not fit perfectly. Sometimes you have to use the bolts to crank it into position. When metal is welded it will deform, so eventhough the bars are made on a gig they are all a little different and so are early 911's for that matter.

What about using some steel spacers under the plate that i have to weld to line it up a bit better? Or should i do as you said and use the bolts to crank it into position?

Not trying to add more confusion to your installation but remove the bar and place it on a level floor. Check the balance, cross measure to ensure squareness. If the bar needs spacers in the the feet do it. I wouldn't advise using bolts to pull it into shape. The bar should become a part of the structure of the car and twisted it can induce problems. I not an expert but have fabricated some roll bars and cages.
Good luck and take your time Carl

Well i was thinking since i had to chop some of the corners of those plates that get welded to the frame in order for it to fit and take the shape of the shoe. I have extra steel pieces that i could use as spacers and weld to the bottom of the plate to make that left side roll bar shoe fit flush against the plate. I know this is kind of confusing so if my home computer decides to de-posses itself, i'll post some pictures that i have of what i'm talking about.

I helped a friend install a Safety Devices full cage in his 85 Carrera and the fit was terrible, but more so was the attitude of the Stable Energies people when we tried to have them "make right". We measured the diagonals and the rear cage section was "off" by over 3 inches ( ! !).
Response from Stable.."Oh yeah....just porta-power it back into shape". Wha ? It turns out my friend has a shop but how many people have porta-powers...and more importantly...why would you need to do it. We had to correspond with the head man ( Tom) at Safety Devices in England directly to get any remedial satisfaction. As it ended up, the unit was still WAY too tight against various places inside the car...for example the front header going across the top of the car is actually pushing up against the headliner and part of the roof steel. We're convinced we were given a unit meant for a non-sunroof car ( this car has a sunroof) but it was confirmed both through Stable and England that the unit we got was correct. Shame, really, as the installed cage looks very nice with its slightly smaller-than-standard bar diameters ( about 1.5" vs 1.75 normal) and it does indeed hug the interior very nicely without wasted space. Very hard to see if it even has a cage from the outside. A little more jig accuracy / QC / or support from the people you buy from would have been nice, though. ---Wil Ferch ( who went with a DAS rear section instead for his dual-purpose car)

Ok, i finally was able to almost un posses my computer so here it goes with the pics. There should be 5 of them of four mount points and one of the top bar hitting the roof.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() That last pic is the gap i'm talking about, notice that even with the chassis plates installed (not in that picture) it still is like 1/4 inch from the side of the chassis.

That looks close if you slide the bar back doesn’t that space get smaller? When I installed mine it took some trial and error, some grinding of the feet and a little persuasion with the hammer.

Well that's the thing, i posted the roof shot to show that i can't go back any farther. I may just have to weld some spacers in the front of the mount plate, i'll let you guys know how it goes.

John Cramer:
To answer your question, John, all I can say is ...."Why"? We weren't treated in a fashion that showed any concern for our problems. Please explain. We also never received the rear section back up plates that were promised. We were given the royal run-around (" 3-inches out?...musta been the UPS guy" , etc etc). The moment the check cleared, we were fully on our own until we got the factory to intervene on our behalf. --Wil Ferch
