fuel system experts, please help
My question is specifically about a fuel pump for a 75 CIS engine. Before I installed the pump, I wanted to test it. So, I put hose in both ends and the end of the hose in gas and the other in an empty jug... and, nothing. I thought it would need to be primed, so i used a funnel and filled the hose and pump with gas... and still nothing. i filled BOTH ends of hose with gas, and the "out" end did nothing (the gas just sat in the hose) and the "in" end spit out some gas (back out of the hose) and then just gargled and made bubbles. Does the pump have to be hooked up to the engine so it has some kind of back pressure? Am I just severely mentally challenged? any help is appreciated. Thanks kris out

I never ran a new pump dry.. so I can't confirm if it has to be primed.. but if so then it would get very hot and ruin the pump quick

I've tested a pump dry before, but only momentarily.
I've also used the pump in my car to drain the tank before. Fuel line disconnected at engine bay and hose connected so it would pump to a container. W/O high back pressure, the pump seems to run fine. Looks like you may have a bad pump or poor power to your pump, low VAC or poor connection. Is it a new pump? |

No, it's a used pump I got from somwhere I have bought many things in the past without problem, and they told me it had been tested. It makes noise like it is running, but possibly there is something wrong with it and it won't pump.

If the pump works, it should should wind up and almost jump out of you hand when you energize it.

Kris,
I would caution you to be VERY CAREFUL when testing fuel pumps around open supplies of gasoline ... sparks and fumes could result in the 'remake' of a certain ill-conceived Michael Jacson Pepsi commercial -- remember a bit of hair on fire??? A sealed marine or MIL-SPEC toggle switch and secure power leads are a basic prerequisite for safe testing! An assistant with fire extinguisher-in-hand is the only way to be safe! It does sound like the pump you tested was bad ... though pressure-fed supply of gas from the tank is probably the only way to be sure!
