DIY Clutch R&R in Northeast OH?

I need to R&R my clutch and update my g50 on my '87 coupe this fall. Anyone interested in helping me do the swap?

I'm mechanically inclined but have never ventured farther than brakes, rotors, exhausts and fluids on my car(s). I will supply food & suds. I'm located in Northeast Ohio and would like to complete the job in November before the Lake Erie snow machine is up and running.

You'll love this project. I did it too. It's best to get two floor jacks, two jack pads, two cinder blocks and two blocks of 4x4 boards. Jacking both sides of the car up together saves a LOT of time. Don't forget to get the correct clutch alignment tool - ask me how I know. And keep John Walker's phone number handy for when you get stuck. This is a fun job.

I have also done this job and it is pretty simple, You need to decide if you are going to go with the rubber center disk or the spring center clutch. The spring center is reccomended. You should also replace the flywheel, flywheelbolts, starter ring gear and use the weltmeister g50 upgrade, throwout bearing and fork. In the event you have any questions, feel free to ask. Also , pelican has all the parts you need at a real decent price. JIM

I've heard that the factory has changed its g50 update know to one that no longer requires drilling. Anyone else heard of this? Both the Cleveland area private Porsche specialists (Steinels and Autobahn Extremist) recommend the original factor update and do not like the weltmeister kit which is contrary to the sentiment of this Board.

Pete - Count me in. Where in Cleveburg? I'm in Lakewood. I'm no expert but will sure help you drink some beer if I'm in town.

It would be interesting to find out what they don't like about the weltmeister kit which is two brass bushing and a slightly smaller od shaft

I'm down in akron, Ive seperated the tranny from the motor on my 2.2 (switched from sporto to 901), and my 2.7 turbo when I rebuilt both motors. Let me know when you'll do it and I'll see if I can get up there.

seems like a good winter project, I'm doing the ignition, brakes and interior

I'm in Solon.
I plan to attend the Nelson Ledges Fundayz, which is an open track session for street legal cars from 9am to 4pm for $100, on November 2nd. Rumor has it they repaved the track from the front straight to the carousel around Oct 1.

As long as the clutch holds up for that, I plan to start the project Mid-November.

Errr. ... cinder blocks?

Just use these to rest the suds and snacks on - not to support the car (if that's what you had in mind). I wouldn't want this project to stray too far away from fun.
