964 purchase with 911 3.2 cab trade-in

Hi guys,

I would like to ask for your opinion.

I am currently looking into buying a very nice looking 05-92 964, complete with Raf leather interior, Airco, etc.. km is 96.000. The car comes complete with service history and receipts covering the last 5 years or so. The dealer who is selling the car wants to trade in my Carrera 3.2 cab (87, with 171.000km's service documents available). They want to have an additional €12.500 on top.

Can anybody give me advise if this is reasonable?

I read a lot of stories that in the market the Carrera 3.2 is priced on same level as early C2 models. This would make the price that I have to pay on top of my car a little high!

All advise is welcome!

thanks

Joris

Thanks Schuey, I was already a little afraid that it might be to much...

Perhaps better to wait until summer comes, and then look for a 993

I agree that it sounds high, but I can only comment based on my understanding of the U.S., and not the Dutch market. In our market, a NICE MY'87-'89 Carrera can be priced more expensively than a less nice early 964. Given the same condition then a 964 which is 5 years newer MIGHT go for $5k more. In your situation a couple of things are different: 1) I am assuming that the 964 is a Coupe? You did not specify. At this time of year you might not be getting top dollar for your Cab. Also, depending on the buyer, a Cab can either add or subtract value. 2) Your '87 has nearly double the mileage of the 964. 3) I am not sure that a MY '92 would be considered an 'early' 964. I think that most of the issues were resolved by then. 4) Which 964: C2 or C4? Once again, there is a difference between the pricing on the 2, with the C2's getting a little premium over the C4's (except in regions with long snowy winters).

All in all the dealer's price seems pretty high at first glance, but then after thinking about it a little longer it still seems but a little high. I think that you have a couple of options which include a counter-offer (I'd start off with about an 8k Euro addition on top of your Cab) or, if feasible, sell your Cab on the open market if you feel you can get more than the dealer's 'trade-in' price. Remember, you will virtually always pay more for a vehicle, and get less for your existing vehicle at a dealer (at least that is the way it is in the U.S.).

Hope this helps, and good luck,
Tom

Thanks Tom,

The 964 is a coupe and not a convertible, the dealer is the same dealer where I purchased the 911 carrera 3.2 cab. He is quite fair in trade in price since he is giving me exact the same price (€26.500) back as I payed for it some 2 years ago. The list price of this 964 C2 is €41.000 and at first he was asking €15.000 on top of my carrera 3.2, I managed to bring it down to €12.500 although my final offer was €11.500 I have to say that the car is really in mint (completely standard condition) and I have not been able to detect any faults. I went to another (OPC) dealer who also had a 964 C2, not so nice and with more km's on the clock, for sale (€35.000) . However they were only willing to give €20.000 back for my car.
I think in the end it all comes down to how much I have to pay on top of the trade-in value of my existing car.

Thanks again and more advise is of course welcome!

Joris

Are we really talking in Euros here? That's like over $30k US for an '87 Carrera cab? No f'ing way in the world! You can come over here, stay in a very nice hotel, pay for an Andial rebuild, ship the car back and you'd still save money on the deal. What's with those prices?

Once again, speaking from the perspective of the situation in the U.S., the used car market is still really soft (although it might have hit bottom by now). As such it is truly a buyers market. If you have the cash and are ready to make the deal immediately, then great bargains can be had.

I was taught long ago not to be embarrassed by making a 'low ball' offer on things I was interested in buying. Some potential buyers won't do this, thinking that they might offend the seller. This won't happen: The worst thing that the seller will do is to say "no", then you can negotiate from there. Keep plugging away at them, starting from a low price. Be prepared to walk away. And let them know that for the right deal you are ready to conclude the transaction TODAY.

Money talks, nobody walks, especially in today's soft market.

Good luck,
Tom

Do not know about the Netherlands but here in Spain 964s are in the 20-27 K€ range. Carreras are 16-20 k€ with +-3k€ premium for convertibles.

hallo
The Netherlands have a special Tax situation and the Cars there are about 20-30% more expensive than in Germany or other Euro countries . I would say that a 92 Coupe is max. 5 k more than your Cab .

Talking Decision made

Hi there guys,

Just wanted to let you know how the story ended.

I went back to the dealer (extremely nice people by the way) to talk about the price, then asked what the price would be for a 993. Turned out that they had a very nice example, that was reasonable priced, although the color is Amaranth (polite way of saying purple!!). Anyway the color made me hesitating, but they offered me to take the car back home for a test spin and to get approuval from the home front.... Of course after driving the car for 2 days, noway I wanted to give it back, no matter what the color was/is (clever sales trick). So I bought it.

So " Purple Haze" it is!

very nice...and I hope the price was right for you. I know that cars here in Germany will not sell for the price you stated.

Good choice! The colour just means more people (read girls) will look at you!
