Rear stud replacment

Blondie, my 914/6 has a Carrera rear set up....due to a chassis stiffening kit the rear tires are REAL close to the inner fender well.

Spacing the wheels out 1/2 inch is going to require longer studs to be safe. There is NO ebrake....what is the procedure for stud removal w/o having to pull the whole assembly?

Anyone BTDT?

Hi Mike,

I replaced the rear studs on my 3.2 (with e-brake) over the summer. Its is not difficult.

Once the rear disc is off you can use the space behind where the e-brake adjuster would normally be to remove the studs and insert the new ones. Once the disc is off it is fairly plain to see how you do this. If the studs are really long then you will find that you can't squeeze them into place. Mine just fitted in and the studs were about an inch longer than OE - I think 72mm but I would have to measure. I just used a hammer to whack the old studs out and a breaker bar and steel wheel nuts to pull the new studs thru.

The recommended practice is to remove the hubs (requiring wheel bearing removal) and to have a shop press out the old and press in the new studs, but I thought this was too much work.
