What Turns On Engine Heater Blower in '82 SC?

I'm troubleshooting the heat in my '82 SC. The auxiliary blower motor in the engine compartment switches on only if I wire it directly to power; it never naturally switches on. The fuse and the relay in the engine compartment both test out fine. It's gettin' cold here in the Great American Northeast, so I've jumpered past the relay to turn the blower on all the time. This works, but... what normally gates this relay? Is it in series with the fan switch (the upper of the three sliders) on the dashboard?

It is the two red levers between the seats. lift them up and that should do it. you can regulate where it comes out from the bottom lever.

Under the two levers that nestorjw is refering to is a micro switch that activates the power to the blower. If you lift up the levers, you will see it right there.

Pinouts for Relay...?

Thanks to both of you. Yup; I pull up the levers and I hear the relay click, but it doesn't make the blower fan go on. I can't quite figure it out. Pin 86 on the socket is always hot. If I jumper it to pin 87 on the socket, the fan goes right on. Pin 30 on the socket has voltage, but it's < 12 volts, and it's unsteady. I can't tell, using the voltmeter, whether pin 30 is the one being tickled when I yank the levers. Something's happening; I can hear the relay click. But the fan does not turn on. I've tried swapping fan relays with some of the other ones under the hood that I know work, and the same thing happens.

Any ideas?

You have stumped me! Let me think about it a while, if I come up with something I will reply.

Cool

Warren would probably say to start by pulling the engine comp 14 pin connector, clean it with iso alcohol, be careful to not use abrasive on thin silver coated contacts, apply clear dielectric protective. I follow every word Warren says............Ron

see if you get power at the blower motor yellow wire. the relay sits at the rear of the engine compartment electrical panel. the switch grounds the relay. the blowers go south all the time.

Sound like you may have a bad ground on the motor. I think you have a colored wire and a black/brown one. Try shorting the black/brown wire to body chasis ground. If you short the wrong wire it will just blow the fuse.

Turn on your ignition, pull up the levers and see if you have power at the heater connector. I JUST tackled the same problem and found: 1) fuse was blown, 2) relay was toast, and 3) blower motor was toast. Good luck!
