Red face We're famous - "Pelicanheads" mentioned in CA Classix Ebay auction

Somebody's been lurking.

"The boxer revs willingly and smoothly like a turbine from idle speed all the way to . . . well, we'd rather not disclose top rpm for fear some Pelicanheads might get bent out of shape, again. "

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=10156&item=2437852221

So why is there no redline on the tach?

we wouldn't have to spank him if he didn't say things like "The modern Type 915 5-speed transmission provides its share of assistance when it comes to acceleration. Remember the sometimes outright scary days of the dog-leg 905?"

905? I recall 901 and 911 trannies...

clean looking car though...

Clean Car... not!

Look at the wheel wells, they should be the same color as the body!

What is that stuff flaking off near the spring plates?

0-10,000 rpm tach, not stock in a T with a 6,500 rpm red line!

Cookie cutter spare and Fuchs in the corners? hmmmm....

If I could get $15k+ for mine, maybe I should have this dude list it for me!

The stupidity of these ads is evident in the way that they stretch the truth, and ultimately do a disservice to the validity of the sale of an otherwise nice looking vehicle.

For example, the ad claims "20052 miles" in the initial description up top, however if you dig into the following text, you learn that the engine was rebuilt "40K miles ago".

WTF?? Those are the type of discrepancies that we Pelicanheads are easily alerted to. How could a potential buyer believe anything that these types of people claim about a car, if they stretch the truth (lie) about the mileage right at the start?

After its brief introduction on the '73 ½ U.S.-spec 911, C.I.S. was used across the board until the late 1980s, with great success, terminating induction woes and ushering in the era of reliability.

Yeah, he definitely has been reading the ol' Pelican Board.

PS: front bumper appears to be dented in above the license plate.

I have to admit, the CA Classix guy(s?) sounds like he really loves Porsches. And let's be honest, every successful sale that this guy makes at the prices that he's asking does bolster the value of everyone's car a bit. Beyond the usual salesman's hype (and his is generally better and more accurate then most on EBay), the cars that he's been selling appear to be in pretty good shape.

I guess if he were to show himself here I'd welcome him as a fellow Peliconhead.

I don't know all that much about the options available on the early cars. Mine has two door pockets on each door; the clam-shell under the arm rest and an open map pocket in front of that. This car only has the clam shell. Were some cars only equipped with one door pocket and not the open map pocket?

I know there is a big 911 market in la la land for the $10k-$15k 911. Some dealer in the Marina makes big bucks doing it. He finds them beat and cheap.. polishes the paint and wheels etc.. and the young hipsters buy 'em.

Yeah, where's the tattoo lady

I'm always impressed at the bids that they generate from their ads. It just shows what a bunch of photos and some good "copy" does to improve the final sale price.

I'm thinking of writing a "classix" style ad to help my brother sell one of his cars

These are the types of ads that prey on the 911 newbie, much like me 1.5 years ago (no I didn't buy a car from him)....These cars are gorgeous to look at and you just get overwhelmed with all of the camera angles, receipts, descriptions, etc...

Experience buyers like this group see through it but someone's gonna buy it and I bet they're not adding it to a stable of p-cars...

You've gotta give the guy credit for the effort he puts into the listings.

Even though he tends to get a little creative with the facts, I too, would welcome him to the Pelican fraternity. I've poked holes in his listings before, too, but it seems to be a community passtime here...

tiorio;
Trying to judge hidden meanings by my mispellings is about as meaningful as predicting the future by reading the entrails of the dead squarrel on the road. Both mispellings on my part and squarrel roadkills happen often far more then either one of us would like.

I'm with Doug on this one! As the old Kingston Trio song says: "We came to town to see, that old tattooed lie-dee, she was a sight to see, tattooed from head to knee...."
