Chin spoiler install tips please
 

I will be installing a chin spoiler soon on my 87 Carrera, I read the part in Wayne’s book a few times and searched for threads on the subject. If anybody has some tips or pics please shoot them my way.

One question is do the holes for the two studs at each end of the spoiler get drilled in the center of the flat area at the trailing edge on the valance?

If anybody has a pic of those holes it would be a big help.

I helped my brother-in-law install the chin spoiler on his SC. After sizing it up we came to the conclusion that the easiest way to go would be to remove the valence. Once this was done, we positioned the spoiler and drilled the holes for the studs on the ends (it seemed pretty obvious where the holes went once we had removed the valence and size it up). We then moved out from there, checking to make sure that spoiler would fit evenly after drilling each hole. Time and patience resulted in a perfect fit.

I did mind a little differently since I was doing it by myself. I drove the car up on ramps so I could access the bottom of the valence and have room to drill holes. I started with the center hole and positioned the valence and attached the first bolt and worked my way outward. The valence is flexible enough to bend and position each hole along the underside of the valence and drill with the other hand. It turned out great. There was a noticeable difference in high speed stability post installation--above 70 mph. So make sure you do a few high speed runs when you're done (no school crossings and church parking lots) :)

I did this by myself on my '88 and left the valance on. A couple things, the big ass oil cooler protector bar needs to be removed as well as dropping the oil cooler out of the way for easier access. Make sure you have a magic marker to mark hole positions and use a punch to ensure a good bite into the metal. Make sure that you drill your holes the bottom lip of the valence towards the back of the car and even then you may be to trim the holes in the spoiler a bit to get a snug fit. I used a round file to adjust each hole a mm or so to get a nice fit.
Use some POR or touch up paint on the freshly drilled holes to cover up bare metal and let it dry. Then attach your spoiler. The holes on the sides of the valence are the most important. Screw those up and you're cooked. I make a template and triple checked placement.
Depending on the install kit you got, you will probably need some large washers to ensure enough surface area on the attachment points on the lower sides (left and right). This took me about 4 hours from start to finish. My mistakes? Did not put any rust protection on the holes so I have to drop the spoiler and fix that before winter kicks in. Have fun!

I took better pictures of the end pieces today. Sorry about the mess, I had a leak in my oil cooler lines, and I finally got around to hosing it down with degreaser.

It's not an easy task - the spoiler needs to be stretched across the bottom to fit...

No, I left the valance on, drove up ramps to get at it. On the bottom pic the crease in the valance looks funny due to the angle, I took the pic last night with a flash. It took me 2.25 hrs. to install. Thanks to all for the info.

Looks great--nice job!

I took off the valence when I installed mine. It's not hard to take off and makes installing the chin spolier easier.
