The "death" of the great 911 occurring with the '74 is a weakening argument.

The "death" of the great 911 occurring with water-cooled Porsches might have more validity. V8 911s give even more strength to the car's so-called "death" or "dumbing down."

Personally, I call it adaptation; not "dumbing down" or "death."

My point is that the car (or its concept) has evolved and continues to do that. The point re the 356/911 trasition is well taken. That was a bigger change and they called by a new number also.

I don't like the way that the 996 "shaved off dollops of charm" as Rod & Truck put it. But it's faster, and really better in every way except the feel of "aliveness" and the charm esthetic/looks thing. But those are all important. I'm a big fan of the Boxster (tho I got rid of mine). The best thing about the 996 is that makes a good source for Boxster engine upgrades.
