I presently have an immaculate European 1970 911T that I would sell or trade for a 911 s around the same year (give or take). I live in Canada so I would prefer a local car because I''m not sure of the border crossing costs etc... If anyone knows anything about bringing an American car to Canada I would appreciate all the help......
Thanks in advance..Chris ![]()

Chris you realize that any trade of your T for an S is going to involve you handing over grocery sacks full of money don't you?

Chris, Kurt V is dead on, take a look at www.collectorcarsonline.com, there are a half dozen S cars in there 67-73 with price ranges from 17 to 35k (thousand) I've got a 70 E that I upgraded to webers and larger diameter sway bars and I wouldn't trade or sell it, but I would really like to have a 67 S. Ok, importing a car from US to Canada is a quite simple task. Been there twice and ive learned from my experience. Here it is:
1) have a valid title signed by the seller with the sale price 2) have an original bill of sale with price, names, serial#, etc Have it notarized is a good thing but not mandatory 3) you can use US plates to travel from x to z. Your insurance - if you own another car, will cover it temporarily. Here is gets a little tricky. Some states require that you leave the title at the US Border export control center for three days BEFORE entering the car in Canada. They will check if the car is reported stolen. If not, they will CLEAR the car for export. But most provinces DMV arent asking for it. Just bring the title to you local DMV and they will do that research themselves. Afterward youll have the car inspected for regulations and they will give you your province registration making it a Canada car. I am not saying DONT BOTHER WITH US BORDER, i am saying that Canadian laws arent requiring that you leave the car in US. This is a fussy situation. Do what you feel is better. I decided to follow the US regulations, and leave the car in US while they were investigating. In fact, as it happened to me once, you may get stopped by the US Border prior to you entering Canada. They do that sometimes to EVERY CAR exiting the US. If you take a chance not planning to leave the title for investigation, youll be in trouble. Theyll suspect that you were NOT to follow or that you were ignoring the law, which is the same. And believe, these guys arent laughing with the law. This done: 4) after 72 hours, you pick up your cleared title at the US Border export control center. Dont forget to bring the car.... 5) at Canadian border, if car is 25 years or older, you wont pay importation fees. Youll only (sigh) pay GST and provincial taxe.Be prepared to show any receipts. Dont try to cheat them with a lowball sale price to save some $ on taxes. They have a red book, theyll go into your bank account to see if you withdraw an amount corresponding to what you declared. Dont get yourself in trouble for a mere 100US$.... Ask me why... - - How can a government ask for sale taxes on a sale that took place between TWO INDIVIDUALS and OUT OF THE CANADA TERRITORY still amazes me... - -- 6) Go to your DMV, ask for inspection form for Canadian or provincial compliance to imported cars. 7) Have an inspections made by an DMV-endorsed garage. Usually, US cars are like the Canadian ones regarding their compliance. As long as it is mecanically sound, youll have no trouble. 8) With the inspection behind you, andhopefully OK, go back to DMV where they will give you your 911POR plates...... Thats it. I imported a 914 and a 911SC that way with success. Good luck!

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> California does the same thing. New cars have to have been registered in another state and have over 5,000 miles....so much for buying a car in a state w/o sales tax. Used ones same way.....only cars going OUT of state can get away with it....BUT...a dealer has to collect tax unless the car is DELIVERED out of state....an out state resident MAY be able to get them back if they apply to their DMV....but don't hold your breathe. Up until recently a retired California resident had to pay California taxes on his retirement check even if he lived in another state.....

Well, up here, our government taxes.... taxes! Yup, you pay 10$ for an item, add 7%. That makes 10.70$. Add 8.5% of that total... that makes robbery....

Go to Canadian Tire and pick up their pamphlet on importing. They have some contract or deal with CCRA to provide all the required services. Anyways, I never tell anyone to go to Canadian Tire for anything but in the case they have all the required info.

I am not sure the clever folks at Canadian Tire knows about US laws.... Youre looking for trouble if youre not complying to US laws. I strongly suggest that you leave the car/title 72 hours prior to exporting the car, for investigation meaning. If they dont catch you, its fine. If they do catch you trying to avoid their requirements, be prepared for a long long badtrip...... and they have the right to cease your vehicule.

Hi Chris:
I also have imported 15 yr old and older cars so if you have a particular question, send me a PM. I have an S but it is not for sale (needs body work). Good luck! Randy |
