Help identifing this in my engine
 
I have this tube that I have never seen before on a 911 engine. I think it has something to do with the smog pump that has been removed but I'm not sure. It terminates at the engine tin where the smog pump would be and from there it has an injector looking thing at each cylinder. Here are the pictures of it:

Can someone just tell me what it is please?

Looks like an air injection system for pollution control.

Bob's right, fittings for the now removed air injection pump. 78/79 SC's (US production) had them, some earlier 2.7's if I remember correctly had them as well. The pump was driven by a belt fromt the crank pulley and was used to reduce emissions by injecting air
into the exhaust side of the head.

The pump was driven by a second belt from the fan pulley, not the crankshaft. Your car has the second groove on the fan pulley for that second belt.

The second crankshaft pulley drives the air conditioning compressor.

The air pump was located on the top of the chain box for cyl 1 - 3 (hence the 2 13mm nuts on the top of the housing when the rest of them are 10mm.

If you are feeling ambitious, you can remove the air injection system and plug the holes.

That is what I thought it was. I just thought the air was introduced into the exhaust manifold, not directly into the cylinder. Since my car is a RoW, was this something that would have been added, or was this standard equipment for RoW cars in 81? I know RoW cars in 81 did NOT have the oxygen sensor, so I wasn't sure if this would have been there or not. Looks stock though.

If I were to remove the system, what could I use to plug the holes? Anyone doen this before?

It wasn't injected into the cylinder, but rather into the exhast port before the head pipe. Could have just as well been put into the pipe. There are some bolts that fit directly into the hole, the 914 guys have the skinny. Search thier BBS for *air injection.* The best way is to weld them up, but you can't do that on the car, obviously.

I've got the same thing on my 83SC. At some point all those extra lines were removed and the 'injectors' were left on and sealed off. I would be hesitant to remove them and attempt to plug them if they are corroded. In my case at least, if it ain't broke don't fix it! It's ashame that can't be part of a twin-plug project, nicely tapped holes and all!

Thanks for the help. Since they aren't doing anything but sitting there, I'm not going to mess with them. If I ever rebuild the engine I will get rid of them. But hopefull that will be a long time.
