New look... silver fuchs
Well, I went and did it.
I put the car on jackstands two weeks ago and spent several evenings in the workshop inhaling paint fumes and sanding. The wheels turned out pretty well, and I'm very happy with the new look. Here are the two fronts, ready to go back on... And here's the car with the wheels on... My attempt at an "artsy" shot... For contrast, here's the old, boring look... ![]() For those planning on repainting their wheels, rest assured it is quite easy to get good results using quality rattle-can paint. I used all Wurth products -- self-etching primer, silver laquer, clear laquer, and black gloss lacquer on the wheel nuts and for the black crests on the centers. The clear lacquer is a must, it really makes the finish "pop" and provides extract protection. The crests didn't come out as well as I wanted, but they more than pass the 5 foot test. I'll have to redo them in the future -- at which time, I'll also do the circular groove in black, too.

Thanks Max & Tim,
I only painted the centers, the outer rims have the factory anodized finish. I had to shrink the pictures down (in res and quality) to fit on Pelican, so some detail is lost. The contrast between paint and anodized looks nice in person.

Dead ringer for what I did on my '88. I think it looks much better than the black originals. I am still wrestling with the exact color I want. I'd like to dulicate the satin look on the Wheelenhancement site. What sort of paint did you use?

Buck,
I used Silver Lacquer and Clear Coat Lacquer, both from Wurth. Top quality stuff, but not cheap at $15 to $18 per can!

Luckey, Looks great. Did you install that front air dam? If so where did you get it from. My 84 need one of those.

Jeff,
That's the factory rubber lip spoiler... you can buy a kit to add one to any '74-'89 from most Porsche parts suppliers. Here it is in Pelican's catalog: http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/911M/POR_911M_exteri_pg6.htm#item17

Lucky, looks great! I have been waiting for you to finish them...I am thinking of doing the same. I'll have to "photoshop" them onto a pic of my car to see how they will look.
Great job. v/r Wayne C. 83 SC |

Lucky,
Wow, that looks great!! Nice contrast to the black car. Good alternative to the black fuchs/black car thang, and not as bright as polished paddles. btw, are those 16x7,8? Hmmmm, wonder how silver fuchs would look on my car? Photoshop anyone? Thanks Mike '86 coupe

Thanks everyone for the positive feedback!
Mike, here's a weak attempt at putting my wheels on your car...

Thanks Lucky. I think the silver wheels are much more complimentary on your black car than mine.

That look doesn't work on all cars, but it sure does work on a black Porsche. The understated silver really is subtle and does not overwhelm the car. I never would have thought to do that, but seeing what you've done I will have to add this to my list of likes.
It's like the painted versus chromed wheels on the MGs/Jags/etc. : the painted wheels look far better! John

Answers to a couple of questions...
- Wheels are 16x7 and 16x9. - I bought the paint from Paragon Products (in TX) -- found them in a web search. It is tough to find the Wurth Silver right now due to a fire at one of their factories -- supplies should improve in a few weeks. Pelican also sells Wurth paints, but didn't have all that I needed in stock -- check with our gracious host, maybe they have the silver in inventory now. I agree with Jdub, silver painted Fuchs work best on dark cars. For a red car, I think polished paddles and lips (with the black background) looks nice and gives a retro look.
