Bilstein Strut Question

Has anyone ever see a stub axle on a Bilstein Strut wear funny? After a couple of days trying to deal with what I thought were loose bearings, it is the stub axle that wore more on one side that is causing the problem. Also, does anyone know if I need to replace the entire strut assembly or can the axle just be replaced? Is it worth looking for a used assembly?

Thanks,
Jay

I've heard that you need to mike the shaft in 90 degree intervals to assure a good one. Some are worn in the 12 and 6 o'clock positions and OK in the 9 and 3 o'clock positions. Causes weird-to-locate vibration and shimmy problems. Sometimes can be rewelded, ground out and hard surfaced to repair. Otherwise...must get new ( or used) housing, minus hydraulic guts ( around $200-$220, last time I looked ).
