help ID oil leak - photos
I dropped the engine (for the first time) today on my '82 SC in order to get at a pesky oil leak. My first thought upon viewing the front of my engine was that the main seal was blown and the flywheel was slinging oil out the top vent onto the bell housing. The oil appears too high on the housing to be coming from the usual suspected locations such as the breather gasket/hose, the oil cooler thermostat or the oil pressure switch. I’m going to replace these parts anyway. Should I also replace the main seal? I had not intended on splitting the engine from the transmission.
![]() Thanks, Brad

I would its not that bigga deal it would really be awful if it started leaking after you put it back in. preventative maintenence goes a long way.Check your oil cooler too.

Good time to check or replace the clutch. Yes replace both front and rear main seals. Also do the intermediate shaft cover seal just under the rear pulley.
While its out: Valve adjustment spark plugs oil cooler seals check intake runner hoses (if puffy replace them) pressure switch O-ring thermostat crankcase breather gasket. good time to replace wires, distributor cap if needed. New fluid in trany Clean and instal new engine noise mat. Take it slow, and have fun!

Thanks.
I think I will go ahead and replace the front main seal. Perhaps I'll replace the rear seal as well. I had already intended to replace the intake runner hoses and gaskets. The parts are in a box along with the rest of $150 worth of while-I'm-in-there parts, purchased from Pelican. Looks like I'll be placing another order soon. The valves and plugs were done less than 1000 miles ago. I wish I had waited until I decided to drop the engine to do those. The clutch has only 25K on it so I'll skip that replacement project for now. I'm still courious though - does this leak evidence suggest the normal engine-top leaks? Thanks again, Brad

Hard to tell from the pictures you provided, it actually looks very dry at the top, compared to ones I have seen leaking from that area.

Mine leaked in that area from the thermostat. I would definately re-ring it while you have access.
