My 24 minutes at Le Mans!

Hi Guys
Jus got back to the UK a few days ago from a short trip to Normandy, France.
I managed to take a day trip to Le mans, have lunch in quaint Cafe in Vieux (old) Le Mans and time for a few laps of the road section of the track.

The trip was not planned and it took me a while to fine the road sections (without a map).
Here are some pics of the track:

The first shot is halfway down the Mulsanne straight which is seperated by a roundabout. I did'nt manage to get over 200mph on it but tried
The second is just before a set of corners on the opposite straight. I did actually sneek a few blasts of speed on the corners when the traffic was quiet to get the feel of it. The wife thought I was mad!.
I swear the car new she was there! 'She just wanted to go'
Now the movie and the sections of track are that much more familiar when I watch it !

If you are ever in the area I highly reccomend a visit.
There is also a museum (which was closed on the 2 days I was in town )

Regards Ben

Porsche Crest

Ben,

Those are some neat shots! Of course, the car 'knew' where it was! It was looking for the spirit of past 917's, RSR's, and maybe even Steve's old '69 911S to pace ... down the Mulsanne Straight!!!

About the Weber 46's ... you don't need them unless you are going to be turning 8000 rpm!

What cams are you running in the 2.7?

That last shot taken just before the left hand bend is at Arnage.
As a passenger in my mate's Lotus Elise a couple of years ago we had an interesting little experience right on that left hander.

It was the friday before the race and we were taking it in turns doing a few laps of the road course. That left hander has a nice bit of negative camber in it, so my friend piled the car into the corner trying to get the back end out but realised too late that the car was going to understeer. He dabbed the brakes and upset the balance of the little mid engined car... the back end flipped out and we ended up doing a doughnut and facing the traffic coming up about 100m behind us...... THe car two cars behind happened to be a Gendarmerie Peugeot 406.. oops. We got a ticking off but that's all.

Later that weekend we saw one of the Bentleys blow it's engine come out of the 90 degree right hander. It wasa great spot to watch the prototypes getting their back ends out, squirming about trying to get traction whilst opening up for the long straight (down to Indianapolis I think ??)

Twin Plugged.. next time you're ther, make sure it's the second weekend of June !

(ps. What's with the UK number plate ? You brought your car over to Britain ?)

Thanks for the nice comments Guys- sorry for the delay in replying but on UK time!

Warren- Thanks for the advice, I believe the Cams are Custom 'Crane' cams (believe they are made in/nr Jacksoneville, FL.

Still having no great solution for the detonation which is only apparent on 'lead footing' and over 4K revs. Rotation the Dist. reduces it but also reduces performance. Maybe it is a case of changing the timing and retuning the carbs to match- something I may have to have help with.
I will tackle this however when I next use the Porsche.... work come 1st unfortunately

Deeks- I shipped the Car to the UK and registered it there temp. as I hope to relocate to S France eventually. My folks have a house in Normandya and so it is stored there temp.
Hope you get back in the Porsche saddle soon- and yes those corners are very tempting!

Bruno- long time no hear!
I do remember you!
Seems weird you have gone from a '73 to an '87 and I have gone from an '86 to a '71.
The '71 really is the business for me!
I may find myself in New England for the Summer but alas that may be all work and no play

take care
rgds Ben
