Weight a Minute!

I just got off the phone with someone who believes her For Explorer weighs 6000 lbs, that her 1-ton pickup weights 8500 lbs and her Bobcat can carry a 6000 payload in its loader bucket.

Without first signaling my reaction to this information, I'd like to hear someone else's view of these figures.

Oh, and my 911 weights roughly 2500 lbs.

Max GVWR of my '02 4-door, 4x4 V8 Explorer is 5840!! I just checked the tag - I needed to strech anyway.

No wonder I can't get better than 17MPG ...

Ford Explorer weighs around 4500 pounds. I think she has confused the towing capacities with the weight of the vehicles.

Okay, that's what I thought. For those of you who do not know, a Bobcat is a small construction buggy with six small tires. They can be hauled around in the back of a pickup truck. I hope her onsite workers do not believe they can carry 6000 lbs.

I think there are a few different size Bobcat models. 6000 sounds mighty ambitious for sure.

Actually some of the big bobcats have a load capacity over 6000 lbs! The small ones are in the 2000 lb range.

the 8000 series bobcats are rated right around 1 ton and they are towards the large end of the range.

Clarification again ... max GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) is what the vehicle can support (meaning fully loaded over the axles) - not towing capacity.

GCWR (Gross Combined Weight Rating) is % GVWR+Trailer weight. In the case of my Explorer, the max recommended trailer is 6980 lbs. Using the proper load distribuing hitch of course.

Now the numbers don't exactly add up - my GCWR per the owners manual is 11600, but adding my GVWR plus the 6980 is 12820. 1220 difference - we'll call that a factor of safety

At any rate ... she can't tow a 6000 Bobcat w/a Explorer. Not far anyway.

Can you tell I'm having a slow day at the office?

An open trailer would be around 1200. +6000 of Bobcat ... its barely doable I'd say. I would - its a lease vehicle

The killer is the load distributing hitch - can be pricey for a one time use thing (maybe can be rented?). Not sure a ClassIII would cut it alone.

But an Explorer can tow a race vehicle and trailer just fine

I think I need more caffine ...
We're talking the payload of the Bobcat ... not the weight of the Bobcat. I'll shut up now - is today over yet?

Hey ... what does this thread have to do with Porsche tech LOL!

I have run a bobcat quite a bit, being in the construction industry.
I have lifted the rearend off the ground trying to pick up a load less than 6 k. The machine uses the engine and some added weight for counterweight in the back but I don't think the total machine weighs 6 grand.

I would think even a small frontend loader would have trouble with that much weight

A bobcat is a 4 wheel loader that steers by changing the rotation of the tires, not by changing the angle of the wheels. That is why they are often called 'skid-steer' loaders. I don't think you could fit one in the back of a truck, I used to own a Case skid-steer that weighed 4500#s. I easily moved it with my pick-up and trailer.

A large bobcat can carry 2200#s, with a tipping capacity of #4400#s. http://www.bobcat.com/products/item.view.jhtml?itemId=4804

I have towed my friend's Bobcat several times with my 3/4 ton pick-up.

An Exploder would probably accelerate okay, but I wouldn't want to be in front of it when it tries to stop.
