My tranny rebuild is lookin like chump change now..
I'm currently on a business trip here in Singapore and found out the price to buy/own a car here.
A regular Toyota Corolla will run you about $45k (USD!) and you can only keep it for 10 years. After 10 years, you gotta scrap it and get a new car. A Porsche of any year will cost an ungodly amount of money (yet, I've seen about 5-6 Porsches in the last 2 days here). Something to the tune of $150k-$300k+ for normal BMWs, Boxsters, Benzs. Keeping a used car (over 10 years) costs alot also as you have to pay extra for the priviledge, every year. The transmission rebuild and clutch that I got coming up early next year is looking like chump change to me now. Man, I practically stole my car for the price I got it at, at least when comparing to what cars cost over here. :) ObPorscheSighting: I've seen a Porsche 944 Turbo, a sliver 944 with some sort of modified front hood, a convertible white 911 from the 70's or 80's, a black 911, and a silver C2 911. All seemed to kept in immaculate condition. |
Anyone who would want to keep a corolla for 10 years deserves a good caining.

Only $45K? Hmmm I thought it was more. Maybe I forgot to change it to Sing dollars. I was in Singapore about 2 years ago and one of the guys said a Toyota cost about $120K.
Yeah, and we thought the California car tax was bad. James |
And I thought the state of California was bad. At least here you can still chew gum. No thanks Singapore, you can take your "democracy" and ... Chev it.

Do those outrageous prices only apply to import car ownership? Does Singapore manufacture cars?

It's the size of the island. You have to get a permit to drive a car and there are a limited number.

Hey, I take that personally about the old Toyota ;)
A friend is driving a very nice 993RS ex Singapore. I think once they get a few years on them they are dumped relatively cheaply. A lot of our cars (right hand drive) are ex Singapore and Japan. |

On the other hand, taking a cab everywhere is dirt cheap, and the food is even cheaper and very tasty. Of course, nothing can beat the N.Cali weather. |

Kuala Lampor has an active porsche club, or group. Several years ago, on a road trip from there to Georgetown (Penang) I cam across at least a dozen modified 911 racing on the toll road. Quite a sight and a tota surpise from my rented twingo.
