Porsche 930 prices

Are these EBay prices accurate? http://listings.ebaymotors.com/aw/plistings/list/category6433/index.html?from=R4
I'm not buying off of Ebay but trying to get an idea on prices.
What are "good" years for 930's?
If I were to buy what am I looking for?
I already did a search, but maybe we could get some new info and opinions on this matter.
Thanks,

K.

I think that the market for 930s is a little softer than it has been in years past. Which of course is to be expected as it is more likely than not a "luxury good" rather than a means of daily transportation. Depending on mileage and condition, you can get into a decent 930 around 25K or so.

I think that there are a number of low-mid mileage cars out there to be had for high 20s or very low 30s. I got mine a little over a year ago with 29K miles for 32K. I think I got a good deal at the time but I bet I might be able to do even better today.

As for which years to go with, I personally would avoid the grey market cars (80-85) but there is really nothing wrong with them. (in fact, some people like them because they have a better fuel delivery system) I would shop long and hard for one that is in good condition and has a clean PPI.

Now, don't forget the fact that NO 930 will cost you just the agreed upon purchase price. It is not that maintenance is that bad, but that damn HP bug bites hard and before you know it you have decided that you can't live without less than 400 HP.

I've been looking at the '89 turbos and the asking prices for these are still very high. 1989 is the first year the turbo received the G50 5 speed trans.
I've been seeing the same cars up for months on EBAY and Auto Trader.

I guess you must be looking for a 911 turbo, not a true 930 turbo carrera. My serial number starts with 930 not wpo or what ever.
Not a big deal but you did say 930. I love pointing that one out.
It doesn't matter at all but it's fun to point out. Some people worry about no intercooler in the 77' and later but that set up does add some weight. Plenty of turbo lag but I think the rush after spool up is one heck of a cool thing. I would buy another one.
jc930 not jc911 turbo

trader220 is right, that car has a salvage title. That company always has "hot looking" cars that are really just rebult salvaged 911s... a great example of why you never buy a used car without a PPI first... caveat emptor!

I am not saying its a bad car, they may do great work. It may have been a theft car and not a wreck too. The bottom line on those kinds of cars is you'd better love the car cause you marry it when you buy it. Its very very hard to sell em even discounted.

Trader, thanks. I just put the JPeg up to get people interested in the post.
what are some drawbacks to owning a 930?
When do you rebuild?
How tight are they?
Trader, you have a 1989 Turbo. I'd guess it's a Porsche. What are your experienceswith that car?

thanks.

There is a huge debate many many pages long on the rennlist 911 turbo board on whether or not they're daily drivers. In my case there is no way for me to drive mine everyday. I don't commute long enough to get the oil hot. Mine is also too low for daily use especially in the city. They're not the easiest cars to master either. Of course on the flip side there is nothing like the rush of the boost when it kicks in. The thing about turbos in general they make a lot of heat and that puts stress on every other motor component. These cars were very exotic for their time and they cost more to keep perfect then a carrera of the same time frame.

Some drawbacks would be;
1. People stare and point at you.
2. Very good chance for a speeding ticket.
3. Everyone thinks your rich.
4. If not in a populated area you will have to learn to fix it yourself.
5. It's really hard to quit smiling.
6. You always want more power even though you already have to much.
7. You have to learn to drive all over again.

I don't use mine as a daily either... Mainly because there is no a/c to speak of and with my "not stock" exhaust, there is a good chance my clothes will smell like exhaust fumes.

The thing I love about the 930 is exotic looks and the raw, near race car, experience it delivers. Based on others posts on the board I am probably a little "soft" because I prefer more modern German engineering to get me from point a to point b and really only use the 930 for times when I need to "get away" and experience the brutality that a (modded) 930 can deliver.

And on the maintenance side of things, mine has been 100% reliable over my 14 months and 4000 miles of ownership.

Trader, I'd whole heartedly agree that the 930 would be more costly to maintain than a Carrera. I was once told that turbo engine/trans parts are typically 3 time more costly than their normally aspirated counterparts.

BTW, Do you have Carrera GT update for us?

Rik that and we tend to drive these cars pretty hard. The heat and the use wares down parts much more quickly

Are 930's more of a financial risk than let's say a 1999 carrera?

what do you mean by financial risk? None of these cars is a good investment. The 930's have taken a beating recently. I made a thread about Porsche prices in general a few months back since I go to the auctions and I buy and sell a lot of cars. Do a search on Manhiem auction"

The 996 would be cheaper to maintain just because its newer. But its value is going to decay at a much higher rate.

K,
jc930 is right, 930's are euro cars. US cars are 911 turbo's.
I would look for a 83,84 or 85 930. These car have a good
fuel system and more HP than the 911 turbo's.
Unless your going to a 88 or 89 stay with the 4 speed trans.
With a stock 930, tires and brakes are your main maint. parts.
Of all the exotic's the 930's are most reliable, maintenance cost
goes up with the addition of mod's.
I've seen several nice low mile car in the $25-28k range.
If you own a 930 the HP bug will bite you no matter what!!!
Good hunting!
