Hi everyone, my name is Joe and I officially became a 911 owner for the first time a few weeks ago. I bought a 1974 911 targa and am looking forward to the project of rebuilding the engine and restoring the car.

While I am here I have a question about steering wheel fitting. I was looking into one steering wheel that I liked (not specifically designed for porsche) and I inquired about whether it would fit my 911 or not and this was the reply I got:

"The wheel is compatible with most hub adaptors for non-airbag equipped cars. The wheel will fit directly to a six bolts Momo hub, or it will fit a Grant Euro, or Billet hub (these are their five-bolt hubs, not their three-bolt hubs) with the addition of Grant's adaptor part #4009. The five-bolt Grant hubs are available for most, but not all makes and models."

Please excuse my ignorance because I am just now starting to learn about my 911 and I have very little background knowledge. Does it seem as if this wheel will fit my car without any adaptors or anything? Thanks!

hmm.. if the wheel fits to a momo hub I would think that it would fit on your car since momo's are a popular upgrade since porsche stock wheels aren't the most attractive. I don't know a whole lot about steering wheels though since I love the nardi that came with my car.

Welcome!! These are great cars and give much fun. If the motor needs re-building I would hold off spending on a steering wheel until the motor is torn down. Get Wayne's books on engine re-build and 101 projects. Read them. These and this board will get you going! We are here to help each other. Once again, welcome,

I too own a 74 Targa now converted to cabriolet.
I also rebuilt my engine after the first summer of ownership;
You can find lots of info on the 911 engine rebuild forum.

Make sure you replace your head studs, install a pop off valve and timing chain tensioners; those are the 3 biggies for the 74. After that, you'll love the car and enjoy it immensly.

Once my rebuild was completed; I also put in an electronic ignition as I couldn't bear the points anymore. Hasn't back fired once since and runs alot smoother.

As for the wheel; I'd agree. Hold off until you've spent all there is to spend on the car, then opt for the dress up items. I also replaced all 4 brake systems complete, installed an external front fender oil cooler and tweeked the suspension.

then I put in new Porsche mats, 930S steering wheel and aluminum pedals.... she's a sweet and sexy ride now ;)

Welcome again and do lots of searches because all the info you need is already here somewhere..... I use to load it up and then print it out, then sit and read it. There's a ton to learn about these cars. Find a good mechanic and treat him well.

Welcome aboard, speaking as another owner of a '74 911 Targa, take the time to read these posts and learn. These folks here are fantastic and you'll learn alot and not make the same mistakes as others have made. Do the maintenance and enjoy the car!!

Hey thanks for the warm welcome and advice everyone. I am really looking forward to the challenge of rebuilding the engine myself considering I have never done anything like this before. I don't know a lot about cars and mechanics, but hope to learn a great deal. I am also excited about fixing up the car how I have always dreamed. I didn't expect to buy a 911 at this time, but when the opportunity came I couldn't pass it up. This 74 targa has 130k miles on the engine and runs, but has a knock and obviously needs a rebuild before any driving. The interior was quite dirty as shown in the pics below and it needed a good washing, but I think it's a great car.

The interior was in surprisingly good condition after a good cleaning. Overall I plan on a red paint job, carerra tail, maybe some new wheels and tires...we'll see. But the rebuild is going to come first.

Looks good to me for that kind of money (or any kind of money). Work your way up to the engine doing some other mechanical maintenance or upgrades. Your tool asortment will improve out of necessity. Your appreciation for how long projects will take will come into perspective. As mentioned, tons of help here. Have the car ready for driving when you get the engine ready to reinstall. Nothing worse than having the motor ready to go and some small thing (or several) holding up the show. Ask me how I know.

Welcome Joe, great find. Who knows maybe the problem is not as serious as you think. I would suggest filling in your location on your profile. You never know what generous soul will offer a helping hand if they know they live close by. I enjoy my local PCA membership for if nothing else the magazines. The 911 is a small qaulity community that look to help each other, or at least that's my breif experience. Good luck & will be looking forward to your future posts on your projects.

I think I first came across the site after seeing your 101projects book on ebay and doing many web searches for porsche exterior parts (when I thought buying a 911 and fixing it to my specifications was just a pipedream). I look forward to working on my car with the guidance of your books and the help from this forum. It was the statement from your website that said, "if you can turn a wrench and follow directions, you can rebuild your 911 engine" that gave me the courage to go ahead with the process. Thanks.

Red?!? I say keep the color. Looks good.

I know there are a lot of you guys that relish the old school look, but ever since I was a young teenager my dream 911 was a guards red coupe with a carerra tail. I only recently began to see how beautiful a red targa with tail looked and it is what I long for. I know that means I will have to change the silver and chrome trim to black, etc. but that is what I envision. Although I do think my targa is beautiful as it is now :) (a very pleased 911 owner).

Welcome, Joe! Does your name refer to practicing Jujitsu? If so, it is a great martial art, maybe the best. :)

The price was definitely right on this car, is it rusty? Also, it is an "S" model, while not as significant as it was from '67-'73, it was still the faster of two models in 1974. Starting in '75 until '77, all 911s were called "S" , so no difference in those. If you are like most of us here, you will find that this is a pretty deep hobby. Some of us are track junkies, others just drive them and fix them up. I think that learning about the marque and the design and mechanics is half of the fun.

I'm tempted to tell you to part the car out for a good profit and then buy a nice red targa with the proceeds, but that sort of financially sound thinking is not what makes us Pelicans!! :D

Very nice car. Welome to the land of Ducks, Fanatics, purists, Rgruppers, etc. (Oh, Nostatics also). Don't do anything until you have been exposed to these guys for a while. You may discver that while you thought whale tails were the coolest, that an RS with a duck tail is really the neatest thing one can do to a '74. I know I was always a whale tailer, but if I was going to add a tail know it would be a duck!!! Quack, Quack. I also like your color, a lot. Welcome to the board.
