Turn signal switch problems
Ive installed H4s with 55/60 bulbs on my SC without the replay kit from Marcus - which ive ordered ny now. A week later, my turn signals werent working anymore. Some facts:
- emergency flashers are OK, so i guess the relay is OK as its the same - turn signals indidator in the instrument panels arent working either - my signals worked prior and a little while after installling the H4s 55/60W - my high beams werent working (neither Euros H4s or stock sealed beams. Played a bit with the switch (to rebend the connectors) and they are working again. - i have a loose brown wire with a resistor on its lenght labelled 911.612.249.00. Wire is 4 inches long and in the emergency/lights switch - fuses are OK Questions: 1_ how to test/bypass the turn signal switch to check it? 2_ where does that loose wire plug? Could yo check on your SC? 3_ any clue? 4_ is there any other relays? 5_ is the emergency relay the same as turn signals? Many thanks!

I'd be shocked if the problem wasn't the switch. They're known to fail, and you have all the symptoms. The timing in relationship to the work you've done is probably pure coincidence. Some people have had a bit of luck fixing the switches. For $90 or so, I think you should replace it.
Good luck.

Replace the switch AFTER you've installed Marcus' relays.

So you both think that the symptoms lean towards the switch?
IS there a way to bypass it to know if the circuitry is Ok but the switch itself? Thanks!

If your flashers are working, then you know the bulbs and wires are ok. Maybe you could straight-line the hi beams to the flasher fuse terminal, which is always hot and test them. Get the new stalk.

I misread your post...I thought you already had the Sucro kit. I agree with Richard...install the kit before the new switch. You indicated you played around with the switch and the high beams worked again. Clearly you have a switch problem. As Richard said, install the stalk (aka, switch).

the turn signal part of the switch is separate from the part that does the hi and low beams. 60W high beams are no big deal. 100W bulbs can kill the hi/low switch, but don't affect the turn signals.

A related problem i have with my turn signal switch is that it works fine for turn blinkers, and for high beams, BUT with car parked and ignition OFF, the stalk in the UP position should illuminate the right sided front and rear parking light only, and vice versa for DOWN/Left.
On mine, the stalk UP causes ALL (right and left) parking lights to illuminate, while with stalk DOWN, its correct in only illuminating the Left side front and rear parking lights. Is the switch/stalk my problem? thanks mike '86 coupe

so, the headlight swap wouldn't affect the turn signals. the brown wire with the resistor attaches to a red/black wire that comes off terminal 58a on the headlight switch. i would suspect the T/S relay is the problem. the aftermarket T/S relays often don't work on a 911, so get a genuine porsche relay.

Mike:
I've heard that the situation you're describing is normal, and that the cars are designed that way so that when they're parked on the side of the road at night, a light can be left on as a warning to oncoming cars. Or, this could just be an urban legend and many of our cars are "fubar". Cheers! Scott

911 Turn Signals not working
Hello,
I was refered to this thread by a friend. 1973 911 Turn signals stopped working. -fuses OK -Hazard lights work (all 4 bulbs are good) -"Euro" parking light function works each respective pair of lights -Headlight flasher and high beams work fine -Indicator arrows do not work on tachometer when switch is activated If the hazard flasher relay is operational (when the hazard switch is activated) can one assume it is OK with respect to the turn signals? Don't want to run out and buy a new switch unless I am sure. For my car they are bit more dear ~$160.00+ Any help appreciated Sincerely, Tom Wilkinson |

Tom, we have the EXACT same problem. Lets help each other. Keep in touch!

Is there a way to test the turn signal switch directly by jumping the switch connectors? Like i did to diagnose the non-working high beams? I had to rebend the connectors so they are making contact again. Thanks!

Yes, it is the same ..flasher/relay (though it is not exactly a relay) Maybe I can help. Do you have a voltmeter or test light? If so, find the flasher relay. Unplug it from it's socket. There should be 4 pins C, 31 49,49a. put a small piece of masking tape on the top of the relay and mark on it where each pin is...C,31,49,49a. Plug the relay back in about half way so you can stll see each contact. turn on your emergency flasher button and you should observe 49a-12v(or test light on), 31 ground (or test light off), C switching between 0 and 12v (or test light flashing, 49a flashing between 0 and 12v (or test light flashing). If this is correct, your flasher relay is good. Next, turn off the emergency flasher, turn your key to accessory and turn on either turn signal. You should get exactly the same. Let me know what you get, and I will tell you the next step.
