How to assess condition of oil pump

Hi guys,

I'm re-building my 1974 2.7 and thought I might have had low oil pressure. I'm not sure if it was the pump or leaking bearing or if the guage was incorrect. I removed the pump and it is the 'upgraded' 1976 type. Who can I send the pump to who can calibrate it and tell me if it is good or not?

Thanks
Tristan

I sent mine to Steve Weiner when I rebuilt an SC engine that had an ostensible 90,000 miles on it. He took a look at it, said it was just fine, and he was absolutely right. With the rebuilt engine warm, I get like four bars of oil pressure at 3,000 rpm.

Can't Saul @ PP do that for you locally?

Edit: You might want to post in the Rebuild Forum. It maybe something you can assess yourself with the correct information that those guys can direct you to. I could swear I read some clearance measurements for the pumps somewhere.

Probably but I don't use Sol. It's just something about his bedside manner that irks me.

It's fine. I can tell from here.

Seriously, even experienced wrenches can often count the oil pump failures they've heard about on one hand. I certainly can. (I'm not a professional mechanic) I believe JW commonly inspects and reuses oil pumps. Depends on mileage, but a pump with a quarter million miles already on it, very possibly may still be good enough to reinstall, at rebuild time.

Well my oil pressure was lowish. I agree, when I look inside it, the blades look good, no significant scoring or cavitation etc.
