Road Trip! Me, My Son and the Porsche

Needed to make a sudden Road Trip back and forth to the Bay Area yesterday and today. Took my 13 year old son, the 911 - and drove back over PCH from Monterey to Malibu. Woo hoo!!! Here's my new favorite picture: Yes, it says, "Next 74 Miles" And a narrative plus lots more in-cockpit photos here. The Carrera ran like a champ. There should be something in the State vehicle code requiring 911 owners to drive through Big Sur and Cambria. Had to share a great couple of days with my kid and the Carrera. Don

Don: I have a conference in Monterey from November 12-14. You can be sure me and the Carrera will be spending some quality Highway 1 time on the way up and on the way down. Where was the "Next 74 Miles" sign?

Thanks very much, Don (hi, Curtis!!! I bet you ARE looking over your dad's shoulder!). It's great to read your story...it's universal...family values...unique dad-son moments...a fantastic stretch of road along the west coast...in a nice Car (with capital "C", noblesse oblige)...wow!

My son and I are going to make the trip from North Alabama to Daytona next spring for the Rennsport Reunion II. I'm really looking forward to it.... Great pictures!! I wish we had roads and scenery like that around here. Mike

I live in Phoenix and I've been tempted to make that drive, just haven't found the time. Your photos just may be the kick in the ass I need. Thanks

Thanks for the kind words guys - I'll never forget the trip and hope my Son remembers it a while too. Scott (back to an onshore breeze today!), the sign in just outside of Carmel. After a Chevron station in a small shopping center on the left, if memory serves, it's about a mile or so down the road on the right. The snap of Carmel bay and Pebble was taken from the same spot. I look forward to seeing a shot of your car in front of the same sign!

Don: Just to be clear...the sign is about a mile down the road from the Chevron station?

Scott: Yes, I think so. It's a mile South of the Chevron Station/Carmel. So on your drive up, it might be hard to spot. You'll see it leaving town pretty easy though.

This sure takes me back...all the way to 6 months ago! I bought my 911L in Dublin and immediately drove over to the coast in Monterey and down to Thousand Oaks on that very route: What an incredible trip. Finally getting an early 911 was the dream but the drive home was the dream in action. Thanks for sharing Don. I managed to hit only 90mph with my faulty software....hey it's 35 years old....

Great story Don, thanks. That brought back great memories of the times my father and I would take long, fast drives around the island of Kauai in his 68 S type, and his 68 912. Great times.

Great story, Don. I've been taking my 13 y/o son along on tech sessions and long drives as well. He seems to enjoy them and is looking forward to inheriting my SC after high school. He says his dream car is a 356C Cab which he'll purchase on his own after college. The kid's got great taste. Time with the family is indeed priceless.
