Dinero and run

Ok so I posted some pics of my 81 Sc that I just repainted to original and fully restored my interior. Engine I have never touched, yet has 70,000 miles and runs tight. Bought the car for 9k and dumped between 3-4k into it. Not wanting to sell the thing, just yet I had someone ask me what I would want for the car. Told the bloke $17,500....just for the hell of not wanting to sell it, yet would be a fool for not taking the money. Not sure that $$ would be offered again. So the guy said he is very interested in it and would be back in touch, yet reiterated over and over he wants the car and thinks the price is reasonable.
One I take the $ and run??
Two keep it as I really do not want to sell the car, being that it has been in pieces for ever and now I just want to enjoy it or Three, I would be a fool for not taking that money and go after and pursue the offer.?

Just don't hear nor see peeps get any $ worth a darn these days for a 81 SC. I really hope to keep the car for a spell and await for the ole spike in sales again...........Am I crazy?

How did you repaint if for 3-4k? And fully restored the interior w/ that figure as well?

If thats all the money that you have any you'd be making out pretty well... not like its gonna make you rich though. If its in really good shape I'd probably hold on to it if I were you. If you sell & buy another you're gonna want to bring it up to the standard of this one- $$$ & hassle. Unless you're sick of the car of course

The paint job was actually done for free. My buddy at Modcocustompainting.com did the job for nothing as I have known him for 35years. I gave him 2,500 for his time. He is a custom painter, yet specializes in motorcycles. I guarantee the job he did would run you close to 10k on the street. The car's final finish was polished down in stages, all the way to 3000 grit, in which most body shops stop at 1500 grit. Inteiror was in perfect condition prior, yet I put all new headliner, redyed all leather and new carpet. The car is in imaculate shape, but as mentioned I never touched the engine. I would think if the engine was rebuilt only then at best I could get 18k.
My numbers are based off of what I see SC's go for. I will be honest and tell you that I really did burn out while putting the car back together. Now that it is back I love it and really do not think that I would get into stripping another 911 as far down as I went with this one. That is the problem.....I love the 911, yet really do not think I could get into restoring another. If I were to sell it, then yes I would purchase a newer model, but probably will be miserable as the one I drive would not be as clean as what I had.
My gut feeling is if he wants it for 17k then I will sell it. Friend has a 86 911 and is only asking 18k for it.....

I do appreciate feedback as this is probably the only board that truly knows every aspect about a particular vehicle.

Unless you are having a personal financial crisis, don't sell your car. Sounds like you did this one right. Any other $18K Porsche might be a disappointment.

Your restoration was a labor of love. Now is the time to enjoy it.

I'm with Moses on this one - if you really want an SC, (and it sounds like you have a great one there), keep it and enjoy it. The money you miss out on now will seen like nothing years down the track.

If you were going to change cars sometime soon (like in the next couple of years) then take that cash and run (run to buy another 911 of course!).

Either way though it works out well for you - a great car or more cash

Ash

Unless you are going to a 993, I'd keep the SC.

Now there's the rub - if you're sporting $10K in paint, that changes the equation.

Would your buddy mind it if you got 'em to do the same deal on the next rig you buy?

Keep it..

Keep it!

With the time and effort you've put in, $17.5K isn't worth it. You'd be better off swaping in a new engine at a later date, because that's all you'd really be gaining with the '86. And you'd be loosing what sounds like a fabulous paintjob that you most likely would have to spend a lot more to duplicate...

"Pennywise and poundfoolish" might be applicable here: I join those who recommend considering keeping the SC: it sounds like the car is perfect (BTW: it's not a "thing"! )

For one, the replacement car you would buy would not be "perfect" and would set you back some from the "Porsche amateur" perspective, unless you repeated the painting etcetera.

And, as has been hinted by other posters, consider how your friend, who did the perfect painting job, would feel if you were to sell the result of his obviously prideful work? Maybe he would not be inclined to do another paint job, or not under the same conditions, as the one he did for you... money is NOT everything!

On the other hand, if you engaged yourself towards the prospective buyer, he might be a bit offended were you to retract yourself.

Arghhh....perfection is not of this world!

Classic case of a 13K$ car with a 10K$ paint job selling for a loss of 6K.

If you actually can buy a better car with 17K then I would sell it. Only you know what youhave put into your current car and what it is worht to you. If you can duplicate or get a better one for less than 17K then you should be money ahead.

I put a lot of work into a 1966 427 Corvette about 6 years ago. Just about every night I would work on the car to make it a perfect as possible. About 4 years ago, when mid year Corvettes were at their peak in value, someone offered me twice what I had in it, which ended up being about a $25,000. profit. I sold it and have regretted it ever since. Although $25,000 is a lot of money, I bought the car and worked on it for my enjoyment, and never really enjoyed the finished product.

If the car is a part of you like this car was to me, don't sell it. Porsche values will go back up, and if not, you will still enjoy the car.
