hazard warning light switch fault
 

i have a really annoying problem. the little bulb in the hazard warning light switch doesn't work. this means that when ever i put my hazards on i invariably forget to turn them off because i forget they are on. only when i get out of the car do i remember my mistake.

i have replaced the bulb but it still doesn't work.

before i go tearing into the wiring and breaking something i just thought i'd ask the great oracle for any ideas, directions and thoughts.

I have exactly the same problem and have been trying to fix it. Checked the bulb, it's okay. Replaced the entire hazard switch unit, bulb still doesn't work. Replaced the hazard-flasher relay (it's also the turn-signal relay) with a unit that plugged into the same socket in the trunk and had the same terminal numbers on the relay, but it had a 914 (rather than 911) part number. What that did was make the hazard lights (and turn signals) glow steadily rather than flash. Put back the old flasher relay and the flashers and turn signals worked fine. but of course the little indicator bulb was still out.

Went back to my parts supplier--local independent Porsche shop--and he said, "Yeah, I now remember having had problems with that relay before--there's a certain one that works in the 911 and another one that doesn't, even though it's the one you come to when you look it up in the PET. I'll try again, make sure I get one with a 911 p/n."

So that's where we are now. I'm awaiting the new 911 relay. If that doesn't work, I give up, but I'll be checking in on this thread to see if somebody else has a better idea.

Oh, and my turn-signal stalk is also new--replaced it about 5,000 miles ago.

And I should add that the only reason I'm pursuing this fault is not that I want the little bulb to work--that would be nice, but I really don't care--it's that about once a month, the turn signals fail. But I can restore them to proper operation simply by cycling the hazard switch once. That's a more annoying fault.

The relay does not effect your dash light. There are 2 brown wires coming out of the back of the switch. follow the longer, follow it back under the dash til you reach the end..it is a push-on spade connector...it is easily pulled loose. It is the ground for the bulb. That is your problem.
