one battery or two

Hello,

When I bought my car, a 69 911 Targa, it only had one battery in it and aftermarket at that. Of course my intention is to return it to the original two battery set up but I hadn't thought it was any big deal until now. Recently I told a highly knowledgeable friend that I was running only one battery and he said "fix this as soon as possible and do not drive the car more than five hours at a single time or it could fry the electrical system". I think he said something like the alternator would be confused because it thinks its charging two batteries when its only charging one. Can anyone back him up on this?

Thanks

Brian

Brian:
Never heard of that. A bunch of guys on the board have converted their "69 to '73 cars to one battery. In fact I just did that this past weekend on my '69. The dual batteries are hooked up in parallel, so other than increasing the cranking capacity, there isn't any difference.

I have a 70 and this is the first that I've heard this. I was going to go to one battery next spring because I know one or both will be a paper weight.
What years did they use two batteries? I'm sure is was at least 69-70.

I checked our hosts site and saw this info:

Bosch 55 Amp Rebuilt Alternator, 911 (1969-73) A-603-118-RE
Marchal 55 Amp Rebuilt Alternator, 911 (1972-74) C-603-120-00R
So with the overlap in years where 1 battery vs. 2 batteries..,
It's tough to draw conclusions from this small amount of information.

I don't have any manuals here. I'll check when I get home.

2 batts from 69 on

absolute poppycock that 2 batteries requried. I have a couple hundred hours on a single batt in my race car with no probs.

As long as the batteries are connected in parallel, as in plus-to-plus-to-plus, etc. and minus-to-minus-to-minus, etc. , the alternator is looking at 12 volts. You could hook up 14 batteries this way and have terrific cranking capacity without any untoward maladies in your charging system. One battery, two batteries; it doesn't matter as long as you have enough cranking power.

I believe that the non-concours consensus is to stay with one battery, but you should verify that the battery wiring for the second battery is removed. Otherwise, you may have potential for a spark in the vicinity of your gas tank. Sometimes people rely on just taping up the second battery connector; however, this isn't the safe (smart) way to go.

I drove my 1969 with one battery for years and never noticed any problems. The PO had set it up and I never really even thought about it causing any problems.
